I notice that every device that I read FPN from is asking for me to re-login this morning.  Does that mean that the migration is done?

I was asked the same thing.  Earlier(or yesterday? it's a blur) I got page about down for the great migration.

As mentioned, not yet done, only the database upgrade.

The first synchronisation has succeeded, however, we are now busy checking that that went fine, prior to moving to the next step.

Ok, I just got the confirmation for the final synchronisation to take place tomorrow, Saturday January 14, at 6 am EST / 11:00 GMT / 12:00 CET. In practice that means that we will go offline approximately an hour earlier, so we can create a few final, locally stored backups. Most preparations will be carried out today, during the day and possibly tonight.

As usual, we will keep you informed of the process through our special status page, and once we are testing the site works fine, through the message on the login page.

Warm regards, Wim

It's only a pleasure!

Just finished all the initial preparations and safeguards, time for some shut-eye now, as it is about 3:30 am here, and at 11 am I need to be ready for the actual migration :).

Warm regards, Wim

Ok, the final synchronisation, ip-address migration and testing took a bit longer than expected, but we are back again!

If you do find any problems that weren't there prior to the migration, please do let us know in Community Feedback, and we'll try to attend to them asap.

Thank you very much in advance!

Warm regards, Wim

@wimgSo glad you did a great job, and everything works swimmingly. And, it feels like, faster. So it may have been worth the hassle? I hope you feel that way...

Thank you all for all the work this far. As a ʻnon-techʻ peresona who relies on technology I can only be grateful that you all have worked and continue to in order for us to enjoy being here.

Thank you all for your most kind words, it is much appreciated!

As to whether the hassle was worth it: definitely. It really always is, as a server migration generally means a technology upgrade. Newer technology generally is faster, so from that PoV it is always good. It was maybe a bit earlier than we would normally do about every 3 or 4 years, but we needed an extra server to repair and upgrade the database anyway.

On top of that, the new server is $200 a month cheaper, while we still retain the same amount of disk space. Considering the economic recession and and the impact of the pandemic, it only helps us, as income from donations and advertisements has been going down, while software licensing costs saw a sharp increase.

Over the next few months we will upgrade quite a bit of the software, as new versions become available, and we will make the financial situation a lot more clear as well. We will have our 20 years aniversary (already!) in 2024, in about 18 months time, and we would like to reach that birthday healthy and in good condition, prepared for anything the future will hold :).

Warm regards, Wim
