Pantone colour of the Year 2023

I see Pantones colour of 2023 is called Viva Magenta. Not my cup of tea I must admit but I expect there will be plenty of ink equivalents to discuss.

The description on the Pantone website is worthy (again) of Private Eye's pseuds corner !

Yesterday is history.

Tomorrow is a mystery.

Today is a gift.

That's why it's called the present

I think I've maybe got some ink that is a close approximation to that color, since I tend to prefer pink-leaning reds over orange/brown-leaning ones in general....

Maybe Noodler's Park Red (or is that one of the ones that the name got changed on?) -- it isn't my absolute favorite red ink (that would be Diamine Classic Red, because it's smack in the middle of the spectrum, "fire engine" red, red the color of my first car (a 1984 Dodge Omni and the color was called "Graphic Red").  But while Park Red leans a titch pink, it also is pretty water resistant.

ETA: Of course now I'm expecting a lot of "Rocky Horror" jokes and memes....

When I look up the color by number designation (18-1750) I get two different tones -- the one that seems to be in most of the articles, a very hot red/pink with the tiniest tinge toward the blue, and the same hue (maybe) but darker and a little subdued. I prefer the second one.

Here's the bright one, they call it a color swatch card:

And here's the darker one

Well, my only guess is that the whole thing about Pantone is that it's standardized.  So even if it doesn't end up looking the same on different platforms (and that certainly happens on here all the time with ink reviews), anyone who is choosing that color based on what it looks like on their screen will likely know they've got the color they want for their purposes since Pantone will tell them how to get the color in a CYMB four color print system.

I used to (years ago) have a bunch of Pantone markers when I was an art major in college.  And I think I used to have a Pantone swatch book years ago, too, but not sure if I still do (and these days they're just too expensive).

I saw this when it was announced and immediately checked to see the reaction here but nada, nothing. I checked frequently then forgot all about it.

Meh, but better than than the (also) meh blues of the last couple years, I suppose.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Well, I suppose it will be a decent grading ink as an alternative to true red.

I like the brighter one.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Thank you @Paul-in-SF for sharing the swatches 😀

Oddly prescient are the Reddit votes for Diamine Reddit Sailor's Warning some of which (37 or 42 from my crappy laptop screen) look like good candidates for a Pantone Viva Magenta ink match

I look forward to what other inks people uncover!

Not one I'll even begin to look for. It's a colour I would never use other than for flower or bird drawings, and I have plenty of other options for those.

Some of the spring / core classics and spring/summer palette are nice though.

Well, from the screenshot the colour is #bb2649.

The closest ink colours may be (checked at InkSwatch with subjective adaptation):

deAtramentis Fuchsia or KWZ Raspberry, maybe Diamine Mulled Wine is not far off.

Lamy Crystal Beryl seems to be a bit too far on the purplish side, but is still very close.

All of them are nice summer colours ... 😇

One life!

The swatch card and the online square are completely different. The swatch card is a vibrant pink you could write with and the online patch is more a colour you could paint a bedroom with. You wouldn't paint a room in the swatch colour. You'd go mad in there.

I really liked Very Peri, but this one is just so loud =(  I can see it used as a small accent color, whereas with Very Peri I could see having it as a whole room hue.

The darker one is my cup of tea - look more regal haha

I am currently creating solutons to store/display fountain pen ink (bottled ink), fountain pens and accessories for my growing collection (and also for you guys). Your input/feedback/comment will help to shape the solutions!

I have a number of ideas - also some new ideas inspired by the input from some of you. Please feel free to follow me here, my Instagram and/or Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Fountain.Penda. I am going to share my sketches/ideas/prototypes there from time to time to get your opinions, refine them and potentially produce them. The more input I get the more likely I would produce them. Thanks!  #fountainpenda

The top one is from a clean pen.  The bottom one is what you get if you forget to clean out the pen, or don't clean it well before loading with the new ink.  Nice of them to show us real world ink colors.

I picked up a bottle of Monteverde Viva Magenta. It's red. Moderately dark red, nearly "fresh venous blood" red. Not at all magenta 🤨
