My first attempt at buying a Mentmore(the handsome brown marbled one in the pictures) led me to to the discover that nibs can sing(see other thread).  I prefer other music.  Then this even handsomer more burgundy tinged one was sent to me as a replacement.  The sizing is a bit odd - it looks a little shorter unposted, but longer posted.  They are both wonderfully weighted and sit nicely in hand.  I dip-tested the new(well, it's vintage, but new to me!) one on Christmas and am thrilled to report in does not sing!  Wonderful pen, though now I have to choose an ink that is neither blue nor brown but is safe for it.  There's a little bit of feedback in an effortless writer. I'm so pleased.  large.IMG_2897.jpg.fd4026bb3e38a6eb1230cad4821019dd.jpglarge.IMG_2899.jpg.c93cf5be1e6078c4a7dafa2816ce312c.jpglarge.IMG_2900.jpg.a7c3c0e941cc5879d5d18b5cd1c17bc9.jpg

Compliments of the Season @essayfaire

I hope you and your loved ones are safe and happy where you live, I assume somewhere in Nth America. A 'White Christmas' that looks a little too white for my liking!

(btw...hottest time of the year here which also has its challenges of course)

Congratulations on your 'Mentmores'. A milestone moment using vintage pens from Gt. Britain. Both very good looking indeed!

I have a few Swan, Mabie Todd, several Conway Stewart and many, and various, from the 30's, 40's.  I can't help but be reminded how well designed they were yet for different uses and a different world than the one I inhabit. Rather I think of them as 'artifacts', rescued than as daily writing tools.

An possible exception is one, little, 'snake/lizard skin, "Swan" that seduced me with its many charms! (chewed end and all)!! 😄

Thanks for your virtual companionship over the year @essayfaire It's been good fun. I hope we share more interesting topics and discussions in 2023.

Happy New Year

Ps..finished "MIddlemarch" and it has gone to the list of, 'my top 10' books. A George Eliot masterpiece, in my personal experience.

Thanks.  I live in the part of North America where snow is a very rare thing that shuts everything down.  It was cold enough to snow here on Christmas, but it did not.  When it's that cold it might as well!

Thank you.  I love the vintage Conway Stewart I have, too.  I have realized that vintage gold-nib pens are a much better deal than brand new gold-nib pens, if only I can find suitable inks that won't kill their sacs!  I like very saturated browns.

See??? I think it is rare to find someone who reads it and then does not consider it in their top ten!

Snakeskin on a vintage Swan!  Seems so un-British, but it works!  Glad you are enjoying it!

Hmm, I was sure I had read this many years ago when I was plowing through the classics (so much Trollope, so little time), but I don't remember anything about it. I'll have to try it again to see what I missed.
