Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Monteverde Amethyst

This is review #212 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was a pain. :( The blue component washes away quickly, but the pink is beyond clingy.  Get out all your cleaning tools and solutions.  It's strange, but the computer images make the paper look very reddish, and yet next to other purples, it looks neither red-leaning nor blue-leaning. :( I couldn't get any of the images to look that close to the paper.

The microscope slide almost put me to sleep. :)

Note that this ink is from a sample that was gifted to me and which leaked during shipping. I don't know if that impacts the ink in any way (it doesn't seem to have), but wanted to include it as potentially relevant.

Zoomed in photo (Too blue. Cameras seem to want to make this ink blurple.)

Scan of Completed Review (Also too blue)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Both are a little too blue)

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 300µm. With 212 inks measured, the average line width is 295µm.) (At first, I thought the spot was one of the Rhodia dots, but no, it was just a speck of something on the paper.)

Great job @LizEF  I know that type of purple who sticks and doesn't want to let go, unlike the Evel Knievel quote. Maybe we should list the worse offending inks ;0

Glad to see the bromance between Mak and Essri blossoming :)

  We'd probably be at it a long time.

Well, dang.

The scan makes it look similar to the kind of red-violet-ish purple that is the only purple I can manage.  I like shading inks, and flowy inks.  And Evel Knieval.  But tough to clean, I dunno.  There's more than one permanently stained pipette that sits around accusing me.

But I love the new Dream Team!  Bacon cheeseburgers all around.  Thanks as ever, @LizEF.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

:D  Yeah, I'm often glad pipettes are disposable - note that I find they stain more easily than pens.  And this did come off, it just needed encouragement...

@LizEFDo you use plastic pipettes? I use glass eyedroppers.. :)

It depends - I use both.  Obviously, it's the cheap plastic ones that stain - usually along the seam.

Another great review, Liz. This kind of purple is right up my alley and I might be tempted to try it if I didn't have several already. The two MV Gemstones I do have (Sapphire and Olivine) are great colors.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Right?  So many inks, so little time.  I really liked Moonstone and Fire Opal.  Didn't care for Olivine.  Will have to look at Sapphire (though I suspect it's that blue :D ).  May you find many uses for your inks so you can get more!!

Interesting to read how the different color components can making cleaning a challenge.

❤️Makhabesh and Essri. Good to see our favorite sphinx able to fly again.

Yes.  Not surprising, really, but very interesting.

Thank you, @LizEF for bravely taking the post-review pain to introduce the Monteverde ink.

Do I guess correctly, the ink stained the pen pink and the hand yellow?

(PS: the yellow may disappear with ecdysis 👩‍🔬)

And I'm really looking forward to what Makhabesh, Essri and we will see from the above. ;)

One life!

:) You're very welcome!  (Not sure it was all that brave, really.  I mean, I didn't know before hand that it would be a pain to clean...)

Not sure if "stain" is the right word, since it did come off, but it certainly clinged (? clang?  Ah, apparently, it clung.  What a weird language you humans have...)  I didn't notice it staining my hand at all, but then, I don't usually get ink on my hands, and I'm pretty far ahead of the posting, so I may have forgotten...

"Ecdysis is the process of an arthropod moulting its exoskeleton."  Are you calling me an arthropod? :glare:;)  Alternately... "The term ecdysis comes from Ancient Greek ἐκδύω (ekduo) 'to take off, strip off'.[5]"  Are you calling me a Greek stripper? :yikes:  (Have no fear, I fully comprehend what you said, but those responses were more fun than anything serious I could have said.)

(Funny story, I had a co-worker back when I worked in an IT department.  One of his previous job titles (for another company) was "Stripper"!  We had great fun with that!  Apparently, he was a paint stripper, but for whatever reason, the company left the "paint" part off his title.  I imagine HR types had fun reviewing his resume...)

And yes, this sort of semi-random cascade of connections is how my brain usually works.

Spoiler alert!!  We're never going to find out.  Whatever it was, it wasn't interesting enough for its own scene - that, or they didn't bother to report back to the note-taker (me).

Hi @LizEF. No need to remember, its documented in the thumbnail image of the video ... definitely a yellow clinging/staining/colouring.

(something to be stripped :lticaptd:)

Eeehhmm, Oooohhh! Not really. Meant like a snake (or snek) changing skin. My translator suggested "ecdysis" for the German "Häutung". But don't worry, your reply was highly entertaining!  - and, finally, I learned something new today! 👍

However, I wish all the best to you (including a fast and painless ecdysis on your right hand ... ;) ).

  Well, that's funny.  I record the video, I upload it and schedule it to release on some Tuesday, I watch it to ensure it uploaded OK, I check the links in the description, and then I forget all about it.  I forgot about this video on 16 November 2022. :D

But in this case, I think my yellow skin is due to the color-correcting maneuvers required to get the ink to look the right color. :D

Yes, I understood, and the article may have mentioned that, too - I just quit at the intro so I could have some fun with you. ;) :P
