Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Montblanc Corn Poppy Red

This is review #211 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning only required water, but a lot of extra flushes.  No threat of staining, just very saturated.  This is an orange-leaning red. Fairly dark, but not as dark as Diamine Red Dragon.  IMO, the video has the best color reproduction.

Zoomed in photo (A little too orange and not quite dark enough.)

Scan of Completed Review (The text seems too orange, but the smear isn't orange enough. :()

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (AP: Not as dark as reality; CP: Pretty close)

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 268µm. With 211 inks measured, the average line width is 295µm.)

Makhabesh! 😮

Makhabseh? 😶

Makhabesh! :P nice to having you back!

Thank you, @LizEF for giving Makhabesh back to us!

Was there something else? 🤫 Ah, yes! Thanks for the ink review as well! Not really convinced from MB inks, in a diffuse general impression, this red looks nice and should be used to create microscopy images! 😇

One life!

Another fantastic review, by the great @LizEF

I'm sort of meh, about Montblanc inks, too "luxurious" for my taste  ;) and  I'm sure if you leave it a few weeks more in your pen, you'll need pen flush to flush it :D

I really liked the conclusion paragraph and the bonding between the two "rivals" it echos beautifully your quote,  love being a burden with wings that lifts you up. Bravo!

Makhabesh!  It's good to hear from you!  🎉🎊👍🏻

I have this ink, though this year it's not my 'Christmas Red.'  (That is Diamine Matador, for the curious).

It does, however, form the basis of my 'Century Red' mix, which is always in a Platinum 3776 M.  Never a problem with drying or cleaning or mixing.  It's a good ink.

And wow, it really does make corn silk in the micro!  Awesome.  Thanks again, @LizEF, for the review and the serial.  And the quote.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

That could be.  I sort of like this one - a little different than many reds - but it was a limited edition and is apparently unobtainium now, so my wallet and pen flush supply are safe! :D

:D  Thanks!  Every now and then I manage to find a quote that ties in a little with the story or the ink.  (Though I have to say, the writers of that episode could have quit mixing singular and plural forms in that quote, had they worked at it a little...)

Good to know, not that the rest of us have to worry about those non-problems... ;)

Right!? :D  Another fun one.  Makes up for all the boring ones from downtown Yawnsville.

Actually, no. Earlier this week, my wife just handed one of my pens back to me (at my request), and the fill of Montblanc Corn Poppy Red dated 6/5/2022 (that's May!) has mostly dried out, although it was still writing OK at the time. It did take repeated flushing, and to my recollection Montblanc CPR is not the easiest to clean out completely, but it didn't require chemical follow-up after a round of ultrasonic cleaning. Montblanc Irish Green, with its surprising level of water resistance, is more likely to need aqueous ammonia or pen flush to remove completely, and ultrasonic cleaning is not normally enough.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Good to know. I've never used an ultra-sonic cleaner, so I won't know. I guess that helps a lot, with cleaning !

Works especially well when you can't (or don't want to) disassemble, and with old, dried ink.  Mine was only about $40 off Amazon.  Got it to restore a vintage Esterbrook.  I use it occasionally when ink goes places I can't get to otherwise.

Thank you @LizEF another excellent review, and so good to see Makhabesh back :)

I don't use a huge amount of red ink, but this is still my favourite. Nuff said.

:) Can't blame you.  As mentioned somewhere, it's a bit more interesting than most reds.

I should invest in one of these, but then again, I don't even use a dishwasher ;)

Hmm.  Fountain pens in the dishwasher.  Hmm.  That sounds kinda dangerous.... :P

All scientists are called to arms! There's something to prove! 👩‍🔬

In all honesty: I would never even think about putting a cap or barrel into the dishwasher, but a nib-feeder-unit (without grip section) may work... 🤫

I have a bottle of this ink. I wanted to get it out and use it in a red Esterbrook SJ. I never got around to it, then hurt my hip taking care of my Mom. So it’s Diamine Ho Ho Ho in a Kaweco red Ice Sport. I do love Corn Poppy Red’s name and color.

Another happy reader to see Makhabesh.  I want to go back to the beginning of this story, because I’m pretty sure I missed the starting, and full story.

Oh joy, I looked up Makhabesh online, and found @LizEF’s website. Hurray!!!
