Sailor Bespoke — Build your custom Professional Gear pen

Has anyone seen this?

https://sailor-bespoke.jp/

This seems to only have been launched late in November. I'm surprised Sailor has actually taken that step and made it a retail offering to individual consumers, even though it does not require a big leap operationally for the company.

Now anyone can ‘create’ or design his or her own customised (full-sized, or ‘classic‘) Sailor Professional Gear pen, by mixing-and-matching different colours and/or materials for modularised components of the pen… for a price.

I'm a little surprised that:

  • it is an option (that costs extra) to have a metal grip section, which I've only seen on a couple of full-sized models in the Profit line; and
  • only four nib width grades are available, out of the seven regular nib width grades and types that Sailor makes and offers in the type of nib used in Profit21 and Professional Gear models, and notably Extra Fine (which doesn't cost extra on those models) is absent, along with Zoom and Music (which cost extra on those models).

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Only took a few minutes to pick out a color combo I'd like out the (understandably) limited choices. But they'd need to add Slim.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

When I just looked, no options on nibs other than "regular".

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

That was confusing to me too but the line sizing is towards the bottom at "Nib Width"

Thank you for posting the link.

Though, I prefer the Realo and that is not in the Bespoke offering so it is unlikely that I'd be buying anything here.  Fun to play with the various color options though!

Thank you!

Though since I can't get a music nib (and it isn't in the budget this month) I'm holding off. Thank you for sharing the link, @A Smug Dill.

The icon next to “regular” is for Naginata specialty nibs, and if you look inside the HTML source for the page, you can see the comments make mention of having ceased accepting orders for such nibs earlier in 2022. Sailor is still producing Naginata Togi nibs (within its severely limited capacity?), but reserves them for select high-end pen models, such that it can reap the aggregate of substantial premiums for both the pen body and the speciality nib at once from the customer in each instance.

As it were, the (notwithstanding minor tweaks, essentially just a) plain black full-sized Profit with a (not extra) large-sized 21K gold Naginata Togi nib — never mind other speciality nibs such as the Naginata Concord or the Cross Music — has a price tag of ¥70,000+tax; the entry-level plain black Profit21, with a large-size 21K gold EF/F/MF/M/B nib, is ¥30,000+tax. Combined with Bespoke programme's premium for the privilege of customising one's plastic Professional Gear pen, that would push the ex-tax price close to ¥100,000.

Hello.

Thank you for all the information you have given us.

The supply of Naginata-togi nibs seemed to be three per week at the beginning of the experiment.

https://sailor.co.jp/news/20211208-02/

Shortly before this press release, there was an "ancora" store opening.

It appears that the "Profit Junior ancora my fountain pen" is available for purchase at this store.

https://www.ancora-shop.jp/

"ancora' is a collaboration store between Sailor Fountain Pen Co and Plus Co.

In 2020, Sailor Fountain Pen Co., Ltd. effectively became a subsidiary of Plus Co.

https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXMZO60703660T20C20A6TJ2000/

Correction.

subsidiary has a different wording in the translation.

The correct translation is "corporate partnership.

Hmmm, I only just noticed that Sailor announced three weeks ago the imminent end of Sailor Bespoke:

Probably, the same problem Dell had, too much cost offering all these choices. Dell products are more expensive, so they still can offer some choices. Sailor products, however... I guess that bespoke service made a good minus. Perhaps, nobody even bought such bespoke pens?
