M800 Burnt Orange still available in Japan?

I was always sorry that I missed out on the M800 Burnt Orange special edition a few years back. I notice that on eBay they are still available for purchase and shipping from Japan, usually from high positive feedback sellers. I don't know what to make of this. Did Pelikan keep this pen going in Japan, but not in the West? I'm tempted to pull the trigger, but something seems . . . odd.

Can anyone enlighten me on this? Do you think I will get a true authentic factory item, and not a knock-off?

Thanks for your advice.

A knock-off is highly improbable. I'd even say impossible, but nothing's quite impossible...

I am not aware of any fake Pelikans. Even brands which are faked, it's restricted to certain models (e.g. Parker 51, Sonnet; MB 14x, some SEs/LEs; Lamy Safari).

What is most likely is that this colour/particular LE isn't very popular and it's either NOS or off-loading of items, which gather dust.

I wouldn't worry about it and buy.

Different markets have different preferences and what sells in one place like hot cakes gathers dust in another for years.

Some buyers lock their purchases in vaults and sell when the market has appreciated to whatever minimum acceptable return is reached or earlier if they need or want to raise cash for something deemed more lucrative.

There's lots of Japanese sellers on ebay who have a lot of the older LEs for sale. As Olya says, they probably buy up a bunch at launch and hold onto them. I got my M400 Brown Tortoise from one (at an incredibly reasonable price, too). As well, many sellers strip out the nib and sell just the bodies. I wouldn't hesitate to buy but check the seller rating and return policy, in case something does go wrong.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

this one is brand new. Also, I trust Japanese sellers in general at maximum point. Never ever the slightest problem.

400$ + 20 for shipping.

This a very cool color combo but without an ink window it’s a no go for me. Granted, M800 has very nice ink capacity.

Anecdotal, but I purchased the Orange M600 in Japan two weeks ago; while the seller had a lot of versions of Pelikan, the orange was only available in the M600.

That would be the M600 Vibrant Orange, not M600 Burnt Orange, right?

Welcome to FPN, by the way.

I purchased my M800 Burnt Orange from Japan on Rakuten (and had it sent to me via a forwarding service). I just checked my order history, I bought it in Autumn 2020, and it looks like the retailer still has some left.

There are quite a few special editions still available in Japan. AFAIK Pelikan pens are fairly popular in Japan and I think they just ended up with a lot of inventory.

My bad, you’re right. I just checked and Mitoshoji dot com has one for sale.

I love the look, but do find the lack of an ink window a problem in use. Moreover, I’ve found the piston fill on the Burnt Orange more “fiddle-y” than other M800s from a range of eras.
