Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Pelikan Edelstein Star Ruby

This is review #206 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was fairly quick, no staining, but the pink didn't want to come out of the feed. In the end, some pen flush convinced it to abandon ship. I think from a very wet nib, on non-white paper, this ink will look more red than pink.

Zoomed in photo (The pale parts are a little *too* pink and pale. Shading is not as pronounced as the image suggests.)

Screenshot (Color is fairly accurate, just a bit dark.)

Scan of Completed Review (Pretty close.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (A bit too red. I think it needs some blue or something to make it match what my eyes see.)

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 310µm. With 206 inks measured, the average line width is 295µm.)

Microscope image (As we've all come to expect, the color isn't really what it should be on the microscope slide, but I corrected it a little.  This is 100x, the edge of the cover slip again (the rest was boring), and yes, the very edge is sort of a sickly yellow-green.  I doubt that's the ink - probably light bouncing around at the edge of the cover slip. The ink just did these fracture-crystal-things. :))

Great review @LizEF I'm not sure what to make of this ink.... but what a touching moment of the team healing, Makhabesh.  Bravo

Waiting for next week, impatiently... ;)

Very pretty. I thought I might have bought a bottle but don't find it on my shelf.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

I like it, but I'm not sure there's really anything to make it stand out from other pinks.  It's a case of "do you like this particular shade of pink more than others?"

Thank you @LizEF - once again, you've convinced me of another Edelstein ink I don't need. I like pinks, I like reds, but this is just too magenta for me.

And of course I also want to know what the little snek saw...

:) You're doubly welcome!  (I just learned this one is unobtainium anyway.)

No.  I just took someone's word for it.  But I just did a google search and see it is still available in the US at least.  Goulet Pens have it on sale for quite a low price (compared to the other three sources I checked).  If anyone wants a bottle, Goulet may be the place to go right now. :)

Thanks, @I-am-not-really-here!

It's The Bonneville Salt Flats!  With car tracks!

Nice color.  Bright, as you say... but I so seldom use reds...

What did Essri see?  Will Makhabesh be made whole again?  Tune in next week for The Adventures of Inky Friends!

Once again, thanks, @LizEF, for the review and serieal.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I pretty much agree with everything that you wrote here….

I have used Edelstein Star Ruby in my Pelikan M205F, and in my Pelikan M805F.

Both of those pens ‘write wet’, and on the ‘ivory’ paper in the Rhodia Webnotebooks that I use for journalling, Star Ruby shades from a bright reddish-pink to a very-dark ‘raspberry’ colour. It reminds me of ‘raspberry sauce’.

When I bought my M805 I tried out most of the Edelstein line (dip-testing them in the M805).

I found ‘Star Ruby’ to appear much more red than Edelstein ‘Ruby’. I had not had any intention to buy a ‘pink’ ink, but when I dip-tested it I found it to be a really ‘cheerful’ colour, and surprised myself by buying it (I am a peerless curmudgeon, a dour and ever-Eeyore-ish pessimist).

I use ‘Star Ruby’ to write birthday cards & Christmas cards, an application in which its delicious fruity brightness really shines. Well, at least it does from Pelikans. In a less-‘gushy’ pen it may not give the same delightful effects.

As for the topic of cleaning, I strongly agree.
I have found it to be more-persistent in my Pelikans’ feeds than any other ink that I have run through them.
I shudder to think how long it would take to remove all traces of ‘Star Ruby’ from the feed of e.g. a Parker 45 or “51”

Ah.  Well, thank you for the Goulet lead, their inventory is minus one bottle.  I've been curious about Star Ruby off and on, so your review was rather timely.

:lticaptd: I think the pink areas (or is that a stage in the process?) are rare, but yeah, I can see that.

:)  Thank you for sharing your experiences!  And in a delightful way, too. :D  Even from my Prera, it looked more red than pink in my Rhodiarama (I consider that paper more cream than ivory, regardless of what Clairefontaine call it).  Raspberry is a good descriptor, as is cheerful.

:) Or the collector in a Platinum Preppy.  Hmm.  Sticky, like raspberry sauce.

Thanks as usual for the review.

I'm a bit surprised at how many people went "Meh" about this ink because I LOVE it -- to the point of getting a backup bottle of it.

:) The wonder of color!  Please enjoy!  I do agree it's a lovely ink.  It just doesn't stand out for me from other bright pink inks.
