What happened to Sandy1?

Hey,

I hope this is the right subforum to ask, because it is still somehow ink related. Back when I started getting into other inks than standard royal blue and black, the review section of this site was a huge help and I am very thankful for that.

Most recently I started getting a few new to me inks, a lot of brown and green tones, which I didn't really used before, and of course I started browsing the review section beforehand to help myself decide.

I remember that "back then" I found Sandy1's reviews not just extremely helpful, but also very pleasant to read. I loved how she approached this almost scientifically, and included personal thoughts on the use cases for the given ink, like how appropriate it is in a business or personal setting, or what her pen and paper pick would be.

When the FPN got the last update, I assume, a large amount of images sadly got lost, and as far as I have seen from Sandy1's reviews there is only text left.

I was wondering what happened to her? Was there a reason that she ceased being active on here? With that much reviews and the approach she took on reviewing, I can not imagine that she suddenly lost interest in fountain pens. And with that much activity on here I thought that she was some kind of a "pillar" of this community, so I figured that maybe someone knows more.

Best regards,

Sandy1 sadly died. I think Amber tried to capture/retrieve some of the images for her reviews at some point; I'm not sure how successful that was.

I am so sorry to hear that :(

May she rest in peace and always be remembered by the fountain pen community.

Thank you for your answer. Now I am afraid that my question was slightly insensitive.

For now the links still work.  Just copy and paste into your browser.

Add lightness and simplicate.

Not really.  Dying is as natural as breathing.

It says a tremendous amount when a person is missed this much.  I remember asking of her whereabouts several years ago, messaging Amber and several others, asking if they knew anything.  At the time there was some conjecture that she was either quite ill or had passed.  I assume someone knows her identity and has confirmed her passing.

What I miss about her is her dry sense of humor combined with probably the most complete and thorough ink reviews ever posted on FPN.  They are encyclopedic in depth.  I wonder if it would be possible to capture some of those images and paste them back into her reviews so that the depth of her work might be saved.  Obviously this would require an administrator's involvement.

I didn't realize this was already in process.  Thanks...

Some of us looked into it more than half a year ago, and I've given my input. You'll have to ask Amber whether there were any volunteers to do the outlined grunt work at all, let alone whether any amount of that work is currently being done. As far as I'm aware, it isn't happening in the present continuous sense.

Sandy1's heirs didn't know what a world treasure she was and deleted her uploading site; with the life time of grand posts of the difference nib width and papers made pictures to ink hues and colors. It was always so such a surprise at how totally different an ink could look with a different nib width or paper..

One can still find the 8-9 good to better of her affordable papers in her posts, she used over the decade and a half or more of being this site's Ink Guru. I don't know how many times I've promised to do that. She did change her paper preference over that time span, but all were papers one should have.

Oh that breaks my heart to hear.  She will be remembered as a treasure here.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

I found Sandy1's ink reviews soon after I joined the FPN and they guided my earliest ventures out of the black/blue-black inks I'd used for decades. She always replied promptly and kindly to any questions, and her posts were a delight to read and look at. She is sorely missed and mourned.

She was a treasure, and I depended a great deal on her observations and advice when I first became involved with FPN. May she rest in peace.

I am new here and hadn't yet heard of her tremendous work nor of this very sad news.

If someone knows the URL of her former site of her most important pages at FPN,

we could hope that at least some version has been archived at the Wayback Machine site:

I had to ask another member to learn of Sandy1’s passing. Her reviews were wonderful. I loved the Billet deux mention and the ah Kushbaby references in her excellent reviews. So cool she shared her grocery shopping lists to show ink on a page a day calendar.

Try this URL, then:

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/search/?&q="general description"&type=forums_topic&author=Sandy1&nodes=35&search_and_or=and&sortby=newest

I think she always used the expression “general description”, as a sub-heading, in all her ink reviews from the very start, while that is a term that is less likely to feature in her follow-up comments either to her own reviews or in reply to others' ink reviews, compared to, say, “flow”, ”water”, etc.; and she didn't start recommending at the start of her reviews for readers to “adjust” their monitors until later on.

When looking at in reviews, my first view was always Sandy1's.........even now that the evidence has been removed, I check her to see if the ink shades.

Someone mentioned she always answered questions....true, &  pleasant about it too. She also encouraged others that replied or read other's work and made kind comments.

Ugh. I loved Sandy's style. I didn't interact with her, you know, through PMs or whatnot, but I admired and respected her style, her flair.

Damn. When I noticed I hadn't seen her ink reviews, I'd assumed some job change or relocation, some happy news that kept her from pens and inks, or inks and pens. Or fpn. (Grok.)

So sad to hear I was wrong. RIP, Sandy1.
