I've got a black Sheaffer Balance Oversize which belonged to my husband's grandfather.  Had to have it looked at, and get a replacement cap for it.  But it writes nicely (although I don't use it a lot -- too many other pens to play with) and for being a large pen it's surprisingly lightweight and not too large and awkward for my (small) hand.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

great pen! and awesome pic! thanks for sharing!

My mom picked me up a set (with pencil) a few years ago. I re-sacked it, tried it, didn't like it and put it away

A few months ago as part of cataloguing all my pens, I inked it up... wow...

I'm not sure why I didn't like It the first time, cause it's a great little pen!

glad yours is still getting some love!

Just give me the Parker 51s and nobody needs to get hurt.

My second vintage pen was an oversize black ca 1930 Lifetime Balance I found in an antique store.  It didn't work but it was soooooo pretty.  This was back when Sheaffer still had its headquarters in Fort Madison.  One phone call to corporate headquarters later and the pen was on its way home for a free refurbishing.  When it came back to me about ten days later it was love at first write.  That shape draws me like a flame draws a moth and the nibs are great.   Many Balances later I still have at least one in the rotation all the time.

Gorgeous photograph, by the way.

(for those wondering what is stamped into the barrels of the pen and pencil, they were given as a "Safety Award" and they read:
