MB 149 OBBB - recommended blue ink for signing documents

Hi everyone,

What are your recommendations for a vibrant blue ink to be used with MB149 with an Oblique Triple Broad nib? The main purpose is signing legal documents (I am a lawyer so I do it every day). My go to ink for the past year has been the MB Royal Blue, which in my opinion is a great match for the super wet O3B nib. However, I got a little bored with it after using it for hundreds of signatures. I also ordered the MB Permanent Blue, waiting for delivery (yes, I am aware I should flush the pen on a regular basis when using this ink).

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

I was going to suggest permanent blue, but looks like you're on top of that one.

How important is permanency/waterfastness? Royal blue is poor at that, while permanent blue is one of the better offerings on the market.

Iroshizuku Asa-gao and Kon-Peki are two frequent favorites. The former leans more toward a cobalt blue, and the latter more of a sky blue. Be aware that you might find Kon-Pekl too wet(Asa-gao is still a wet ink, but dryer than a lot of the Iroshizuku offerings).

Organic Studio Nitrogen is a very over-the-top blue with piles of sheen, although it will be a pain to clean out of your pen(yes I've used it in a 149) and may not behave on less than great paper.

Then there's always Scribe Technical Consulting Indigo. It's a near perfect hue match for Parker Penman Sapphire(one of my personal favorite inks of all time) but a bit less saturated and a bit better behaved.

I’ve found Bungubox Eternal First Love(pigmented version of their sapphire ink) to be a wonderful ink. I use it with a Martele/B nib for signing commercial invoices on an almost daily basis.

Sailor Seiboku is my daily driver ink and lives in a high capacity pen with a 149 M nib.

Both inks are non standard enough blues to “pop” in their own way. With a wet enough pen you can get close to a very dark grey/black line on b/w copies for original/copy contrast.

Sailor Seiboku pigment ink, then. It's nominally a blue-black ink, but I'd say it's more of a green-leaning blue that exhibits some sheen. Very permanent and very water-resistant (nigh waterproof).

My vibrant blue ink of choice is Platinum Blue-Black (iron-gall) ink.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

How about posting a photo or two of your nib?

And, maybe a writing sample, too?

One never can get enough of that sort of "eye candy!"  They are gorgeous nibs!

Here are some samples of the Bungubox and Sailor inks. Excuse the fast and dirty edits, I had to remove work related information that showed through.

I'm going to have to give Eternal First Love a try.

I was not overly enamored with First Love Sapphire and find it too light of a hue compared to other Penman re-creations like Scribe Indigo. With that said, most of the inks in this range smear terribly and will run if you breath on them, so a permanent version is welcome. I hadn't realized that they'd released one.

Thanks for the sample and comparison between the O3B and your 2.4mm music nib. That's so valuable to have this comparison on the same sheet of paper by the same author.

the infamous noodler’s baystate blue ink 😉

Beautiful ink, but I don’t intend to ruin my 149 just yet 😉

Well, permanency is a good argument, but not really a deal breaker. I look for other qualities such as vibrancy (I know there is nothing like Noodler’s BSB, but that stuff will not go into the Meisterstuck) and shading. But in my experience the more saturated the ink is the less shading it gives. I am looking for something in between, a vibrant blue with some good shading properties. Perhaps MB Permanent Blue will hit the spot there.

Iroshizuku Asa-Gao is high on my list! Kon-Peki is too light a shade to be used as a business ink IMHO.

I had the Nitrogen at one point but gifted it to a friend, not my cup of tea. Also not really professional, it sheens even on cheap copy paper.

I never heard of the Scribe Tecnical Consulting Indigo, will definitely check that one! Thanks 👍🏻

Monteverdi Sapphire is a nice deep blue, and Diamine Blue Velvet is also nice.  Noodler’s Baltimore Canyon is a vibrant medium blue with water resistance, and comments by a couple of long time users here have been positive without issues from what I can see.  There are a number of KWZ IG Blues to choose from-I especially like KWZ IG Blue-black, but this would be too dark for what you’re looking for.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations.

Yesterday I placed an order for:

1. Private Reserve DC Supershow (should be somewhat close to the Parker Penman Saphire)

2. Iroshizuku Asa-Gao

3. Iroshizuku Tsuyu-Kusa

I would like to try the Scribe Indigo, but the ink plus shipping cost to Europe is outrageous. Bungubox is also very expensive and hard to find. I will keep looking around, but those two are shortlisted for now.
