The site, set up by a calligraphy teacher has the most informative pictures of people during various periods of history.

 

It shows how people's quills looked, much like a dip pen, with just a remnant of feather left at the top, as fellow FPN member Bo Bo Olson pointed out in another threat

Is it fair for an intelligent and family oriented mammal to be separated from his/her family and spend his/her life starved in a concrete jail?

That is an excellent site!  I don't practice calligraphy but there is a lot of interesting information there about development of some aspects of writing.
