4B with is only 1.1 mm? Do you know the Sailor Cross Point & Music? Are the widest strokes from the MB 149 Curved similar?

@fountainpendrawing I have just tried again. Both can get to 1.4mm, which would be correct to say 4B, as Fritz Schimpf estimated when they launched the Italic Edge. You get there by applying a little pressure in case of Italic Edge. I didn’t use a caliper to measure it, but somewhere 3B+ to 4B would seem right. In my sample writing, I didn’t put much pressure as I normally don’t do with my pens, to try to get to their max width.

I couldn’t stay quiet.

Sharing with you the different effects from holding this pen differently.

yes, it is a different pen from one with a regular nib. Potential buyers are strongly encouraged to try this pen out in person first.

@axio Thank you for this sample. How comfortable is switching "holding the pen" positions in writing at ones usual speed, neither slow nor fast

I personally cannot switch the tilting angle within a stroke. I must lift the pen up and deliberately switch the tiling angle. It isn't comfortable for me, but it may have to do with my fingers not being as agile. The straight up tilting angle is shown by the last line of "I bought a pen".

I find the following ways of holding interesting.

  • Right hand, pointing the pen out. Like in the picture. This is the 2nd line of "I bought a pen"
  • Left hand, holding the pen normally. The 3rd line of "I bought a pen"

Has anyone compared this new curved nib to the 149 Calligraphy that is now out of production?   I own the Calligraphy nib and wonder if it's worth investing in the curved one.   Thank you!

it's an apple to orange comparison. the two nibs are very different.

Thank you.   I guess I'll have to find a place that has it to try it out before I make another large investment.

In an earlier reply, I said this pen/nib is similar to the Sailor Togi (zoom/architect nibs).

I realize I don't have the sailor nib, though I've had other nibs ground in a similar fashion supposedly.

The MB Curved nib though seems to be the reverse in that I get a thinner line the more vertical I hold the pen.  In contrast, w/ the nibmeistered nibs, I use a more shallow angle to get a thinner line.  Does anyone here have the Sailor Naginata togi nib to compare to the MB?

This is one of the times where it is better to be left handed b/c our people have learned to adjust and work w/ different scenarios.  I don't intentionally change my pen angle when writing but settle on a thickness and go from there.

The MB Curved Nib is very similar to the Sailor Cross Point in lines and line variation you can get, If using it reverse maybe to the Sailor Cross Music too, you will hardly be able to distinguish the pens used in a drawing. Ink flow is at least equivalent. With a Naginata Togi such wide lines and ink flow are not possible. Tapered lines are much more difficult with the MB. Some line variation from the MB 149 Curved Nib compared to a 2022 Sailor Cross Point, Sailor Zoom 21k, Sailor Music 21k (all inked with Kiwaguro) and a Lamy 2000 BB (MB Permanent Black). Paper heigt is 21 cm:

Some more line variation samples on A4 sized rough drawing paper with Kiwaguro ink and cheap plain copy paper with MB Permanent Blue ink:

Hi. A question.  This curved nib is thought to be used to write chinese or Japanese characters? Or it is a daily use pen?

Thanks

In my opinion, neither. As an everyday pen in Western writing too inconvenient and rather very wide with too high ink flow and in Asian characters you can create easier tapered accents with a Sailor.

It's one of my favorite pens to use on a near daily basis.  However, I'm comfortable writing w/ bold or italic nibs.  I'm also comfortable adjusting my writing position.

Now when I writing on my lap the angle changes and my writing does become more broad.  At any rate, I wrote the following cs lewis quote using a broad italic Pelikan (righthanded)

and then the same using MB curved.  The ink flow in the curved is awesome and one of the best pens unadjusted out of the box (for lefties).

That's some very beautiful left-handed writing

Below is the link to a lengthy video review of the 149 curved nib by a Singapore urban sketcher. The interesting bit is a comparison with the Sailor Fude de Mannen nib of the US$ 20 variety (starts around 12:35 minutes into the video)

The review is pretty spot on.  I never quite got on w/ the Sailor Fude pen though as far as writing.  It was too narrow for my liking.  But I suspect you could probably accomplish as much w/ the Fude as w/ the MB though that could be said for a lot of other pens.

He reminded me that as much I enjoy this pen, I really hate that they put a freaking sticker on the tail of the pen instead making it an engraving or laser etching or paint.

How lazy is that!  I'll try emailing MB and see if they can send me more stickers since mine looks like it may be rubbing off.
