Waterman L’Essence de Bleu Carene

Adding a mate to my Carene Marine Amber, today I received the Carene L’Essence de Bleu.  It has a lovely dark blue lacquer barrel with palladium plated cap with wave pattern, palladium trim, and Rhodium plated 18k gold nib.  Out of the box, the fine nib wrote perfectly.  I find it a sleek and elegant pen comfortable to hold and write with.  I’m altogether pleased with it, as I have been with the Amber version.  From Waterman’s website:

Just got one too, at a very good price from Amazon.  The cap is beautiful and deep blue of the body is lovely.

Carene fine nibs do write very well out of the box. Enjoy the pen!

I bought one also. I got it with a Fine nib, which does write beautifully. I found a Stub nib for the Carène, and that also is an excellent writer. Smooth enough, but also crisp enough for italic handwriting.

Enjoy your Carènes!

I wish that I could see the look of the blue color in this ad. I looks black to me on my screen. It looks black in Pen Gangsta's video, too.

It’s nowhere near black or navy blue, just a dark blue, very similar to the blue banner across the top of the Waterman webpage linked above in my OP, although that may appear black on your screen as well.

Thank you, David and I’m glad you are enjoying yours.  I must ask, where you “found” a stub nib, and in what size?

Yeah, the banner is pretty dark, too. That's ok, I was just curious, and there are very few pics of this pen posted online other than advertizements. I actually own a black & gold Carene (F) that I much like. I do like some of the more upscale models, too, and have wondered about this shade of blue.

Actually, I found three sources for Carène stubs - a source on eBay, Appelboom pens and fpnibs dot com. The nibs are not always available from all three. I believe they can be special ordered from Waterman by authorized vendors. Note that Waterman makes them in Gold and in a silver finish. I also bought one for a Carène Deluxe with Silver cap and clip.

AFAIK, there is just one size (without custom grinding). I would estimate they write a 0.8-0.9mm line. Hmmm ... Be right back ... nibs dot com says the Waterman Stub nib is 0.9mm.

From what I can tell, Waterman makes their current production stubs by grinding a B nib into a stub. I consider it one of the better stub grinds that I have in the "fine stub" category because it is very smooth, but it has excellent line variation.

Agree.

Do they grind stub nibs for models other that the Carène?

I find the blue color of the Carene very dark but it pops more in sunlight. The closest other color in my collection is the blue cap of the Pelikan M800 Stone Garden, which is a bit darker.  The blue of the Caran d'Ache Leman I have is a tad lighter. I hope the photo helps.
