I'm sure those who run the business would know definitively, so why not just ask them directly, in the absence of an About Us page on the brand's website explaining the issue?

No need for detective work to see whether some other company (perhaps Kaweco?) got in before them to register the trademark in some regional market in which Narwhal wants to make a push, etc.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I sent them an email and asked.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I talked to the folks at the Narwhal/Nahvalur booth at the DC Supershow yesterday and asked precisely that question.  I was told that "Narwhal" was too common and that is why they changed the name.

I am not sure I believe that explanation.

Of course they are not obliged to tell anyone the "real" reason, if the one offered doesn't pass the smell test -- which it also doesn't to me.

The timing makes me wonder if this is part of the settlement with TWSBI, although I don't quite see why TWSBI would care what their brand name is, and Narwhal seemed to have the high ground in that dispute (again, in my view). But I can see that not telling people that "TWSBI forced us to change" as the reason might have been part of the deal.

Always wondered why they picked Narwhal as a brand name.

Maybe its nibs are toothy by design?

The change is minimal in the name itself. Kind of confusing. Can’t figure any of this out. I have two of their pens the Key West and the Peter Draws & haven’t bought any others as I rather put my funds to pens under $100 that I think are more novel vs. the $150 minimum and up.

Hello everyone!

Thank you for your interests in Nahvalur / Narwhal Pens.

Nahvalur is the Icelandic orthography of the English word "Narwhal", which we think embodies the origin of narwhals who live around the Arctic waters near Iceland year-round.

This rebranding effort is mainly in light of legal considerations for trademark registration, since "Narwhal" is not unique enough to be trademarked for Narwhal Pens.

This rebranding will also allow us to optimize search engine results, allowing pen enthusiasts to better discover Nahvalur and Nahvalur products.

You can follow us at @nahvalur_official on Instagram or @nahvalur on Facebook for our latest updates.

Our website has also been updated accordingly to nahvalur.com.

Thank you!

My understanding is that the company was seeking to trademark the word "narwhal" but that word is too common to be granted a trademark.  Not sure which country the company had filed for the trademark.  Then again, perhaps this is a way for retailers to not have to deal with the recent Twisbi issue?

I believe they were being legal grief but I think they needed better lawyers; I know of no other products called Narwhal, only an animal.  Apple (tech) and Apple (records) were able to trademark common names, until they fought with each other.  Leaf is a common name but also a model of car.  Something's a bit off here.

What bothers me is we all know who Narwhal is at this point; they've build a reputation.

Does anyone know of other products that carry the monikor "narwhal?" There's that silly song...
