@Tom KellieThank you again for all these examples of the inks you have tested in your Italic Edge.

I am wondering if after all these months of use and the many different inks you have tested whether or not you have begun to notice some staining or discoloration of the ink window on the barrel?  Adn, if not, is there anything special you are doing to reduce the risk of it??

~ @Seney724:

Thank you very much for your kind comments.

At this point, 253 inks have been tested and posted in the FPN Montblanc Forum using an Italic Edge which has been on the writing desk since July.

A number of those inks have been iron gall, while others have been intensely saturated pigmented inks.

The inks are individually purchased at full price in the largest size available bottles, rather than in smaller ink samples.

For each ink tested, the 149 piston is used (as opposed to dipping the nib into an ink bottle) to draw in a small amount of ink.

By no means is the barrel filled. The limited ink intake is adequate to saturate the feed as well as having a small volume in the lower section of the ink reservoir.

Handling of the pen during the test causes ink to flow around the ink reservoir for a few minutes.

After each of the weekly twelve ink tests the pen nib is rinsed multiple times using fairly warm water.

The barrel is filled and flushed, filled and flushed, perhaps 9 or 10 times.

After it's shaken dry, if there's any coloration in the droplets in the sink, more flushing takes place.

As it happens, thus far there's no staining of the ink window.

A photo has been made after reading your post. Aside from slightly brightening it, the image has not been doctored.

Every time it seems that enough inks have been tested, a glance at the ink shelves suggests a few more which are worthy of testing.

The process of seeing what Italic Edge may do with different inks has been a graduate seminar in ink quality.

The photo will be posted below to show the current state of the nib window.

Thank you for this very quick and incredibly detailed response.  It is much appreciated, as have been all your other related posts.

No Type, thanks for the hard work of compiling the list of inks. Would you mind also putting the page number next to the inks going forward as it's difficult to find where exactly the ink appeared? Thanks!

@JCC123 It is my absolute pleasure!  The Fountain Pen Network owes a huge debt of gratitude to Tom Kellie and other ink testers for the Italic Edge 100.  It is humbling to witness such generosity and dedication.

Regarding my attaching a page number to each ink, I do not know if the displayed page numbers vary depending on the device employed to view the site, which would limit the usefulness of their inclusion.  Any information from you or other members would be greatly appreciated.

Tomorrow, I will cross-check page numbers for the site on both iPhone and iPad to see if they agree.  (Not possessing PC or Apple desktop or notebook computers, posts and views of threads are accomplished via Apple mobile devices.)

If it transpires that the Apple mobile devices display the same page number, I will be happy to attach page numbers to each ink tested.  I will formulate a legible system with which to do so in the coming days.

As it transpired that the page numbers between iPhone and iPad devices did agree, work commenced to append posting dates (in the event that other desktop and mobile devices showed different page numbers), along with page numbers, for each tested ink.  First addressed were the latest three dozen inks, followed by ink tests from pages 1 thru 6.  Unfortunately, the appendages did not survive the recent site repairs.

Work on the inclusion of posting dates and page numbers will recommence within the next 24 hours..

Everyone’s patience and forbearance are duly noted and appreciated.
