Hi I am interested in writing with ink and anything I might learn about an ancestor of mine who had an ink works called Ablewrite Ink in the 19th C called John Fremont in London

I know that this forum focuses on pens from GB and Ireland rather than inks. However, there's a lot of discussion about the history of pen companies here, whereas I haven't seen any discussion about ink companies in the ink forums. I figured people who know about pen company history are likely to know about ink company history as well. Rather than simply suggesting that Lynda post her query here, I figured it would be best if I post it, so I can explain why I chose to post in this forum rather than another.

I hope someone knows something about the company.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

I keep getting side tracked because John C Fremont is a famous explorer and Fremont Street in Las Vegas is named for him.

Andy has unsurprisingly exhausted all the obvious lines of enquiry 😉

A long shot, but a possible source of information is Avenue House in Finchley. The museum focusses mainly upon "Inky" Stephens, and the family business, but did in the days I visited contain other bits and pieces from the world of Victorian  ink making.

Even if it offers nothing "Ablewrite" related it is an interesting way to pass a couple of hours.

Thanks everyone so much and sorry for the late replies. I’ve been to the Stephen’s Museum in Finchley and it’s very interesting though I have not found out more about my relation I have learned a lot about how he would have made the ink
