Shading ink recommendations?

Hello all,

 

I have been bitten by the "shading" bug! The Pilot Custom Urushi brings out the shading of ink beautifully with the Lamy Crystal Amazonite. I am looking for other such inks which bring out beautiful shading. Any recommendations? Is there any specific trait of inks which brings out better shading? I am wondering for example, if less lubricated inks shade better?

You are looking for inks that are not oversaturated. Sometimes but not always the shading comes from a darker dye contrasting with a base dye. I mainly use writing samples or reviews to determine what shades.

 

By "beautiful shading" do you just mean obvious shading or something else? Do you have color preferences?

 

My favorite shader is Noodler's black swan in Australian roses. A recent favorite is Monarca Tierra Coorada. Some of the best dual-shaders are Sailor nekoyanagi and haha.

The Stipula colors I have - Light Blue, Purple, Saffron, Musk Green, Fading Grey - are copious shaders but even Dark Blue shades, too.

I just surprised myself with great shading from an ink I've had and used for a while: Pelikan 4001 Turquoise writing in a Clairefontaine A4 90gsm Brushed Vellum paper, staple bound Seyes ruled notebook dipping a Ranga Abhimanyu pen, 1.1 mm JoWo stub nib.  Ink, nib, paper.  Wow!
