Thank you for the information.  I found a bottle of the De Atrementis Verdunning that should arrive in a few days.

Please let us know how well it works for you. I might try diluting Damson with the L'AP product and report back.

I mixed a fresh batch of the Frick substitute today using De Atrementis Verdunning in place of distilled water.  The color didn't change but, as expected, it is a wetter flowing ink.   It also feathers a lot more on the three papers I tried it on (newsprint, Levenger Circa, new Tomoe River).  Most important of all, I put the Verdunning in a mixture of Skrip Red, Diamine Deep Dark Purple, and Aurora Black and the mix produced no obnoxious fumes, precipitates, or ghostly apparitions.  Products of four manufacturers all thrown into one vial and they all played together quite nicely.  Next time I will use equal parts of Verdunning and distilled water in an attempt to tame the feathering.

Woo Hoo!!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I added L'Artisan Pastellier Callifolio Diluant to Diamine Damson in a ratio of 1:2. The result is subtle: it looks like the same color but a little lightened and brightened. I am happier because full-strength Damson is too dark for my tastes - I will probably make it even lighter with a 2:2 ratio.

The paper is from a Nakabayashi Logical Air Swing notebook. Full-strength Damson does not have any noticeable feathering, bleed-through, or show-through. There is no difference in bleed-through or show-through with the diluent added and, if anything, the line looks a little tighter than it does with full-strength Damson.

Sorry, I cannot compare to Birmingham Frick Building Stained Glass because I don't have that one.

Full-strength on left, diluted on right (unless your screen is too small to show them side-by-side).

These are really interesting - I'm amazed at what a difference in tone there is between the two - and yes, I'd love to see what happens at 1:1 - it might even make it an ink I'd use! Thank you @PithyProlix

Well, this is a perfect time for @PithyProlix and @kestrel to do a CRV or at the very least write each other letters with the suggestions, mixes and the originals.

@mizgeorge

Diamine Damson + L'Artisan Pastellier Callifolio Diluant mixed at a 1:1 ratio. Much more to my liking!

[Funny, I wrote 2:2 ratio in my previous post because I was thinking 2ml of Damson and 2ml of Diluant. 1:1 is more appropriate since it is the simpler ratio. And I used to be a math teacher! ]

The overview photo is a little bit lighter and redder than what it really looks like and is, well, a pretty crappy photo. Close up photos seem accurate. Photo to photo white balance isn't totally consistent but there's not much variation. There is still actually a big jump in lightness between the 2:1 and 1:1 mix, though. The diluent had no ill effects. Paper, dip pen, lighting, and camera same as before but I had to change to a different fountain pen because I'm stingy about wasting ink and didn't want to wash out the Pilot Deluxe I was using + I was too impatient to write out the ink left in the feed.

EDIT: I plan to redo the overview photo - probably cannot, though, for a couple days. Also wanted to say that the dip pen at this dilution ratio looks like some other inks that I have. I really like it in the fountain pen, though, because the dark parts of the shading have that juicy violet-black quality that's in the lower dilution versions which I think makes Damson special.

2 rows of images unless your screen is too small.

The 1:1 is lovely - thank you for sharing it. I'm now going to want to do something similar to all my slightly too dark/saturated inks to turn them into pretty ones!

I'm pretty sure @amberleadavis had not gotten any yet.  I have CRVs with alternates she was trying.

Hmm cool. I found a bottle seeing if I can get a second one for them, otherwise they'll have to spilt it :P

Send it to @kestrel since he is the one who shared it with me (and probably will again).

How much would you like?  I could toss in a little Cadwaladr.  I now have a database of the ink stash I can send you if you can open a Mac formatted Numbers file.  If not, I will get creative and figure out a way to send it to you so you can do a little shopping.

I've only skimmed this thread, so I apologize if I'm late to the party and brought the same hors d'oeuvres as others.

So here are a few of the dark purples that came to mind as I skimmed over the posts. The images look lighter in the weird thunderstorm light we have today.

Deep Dark Purple (Cultpens/Diamine) might be a good option.

Lavande is another possibility, but scented inks are not for everybody.  Right?

Best,
