Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Sailor Kujukuri Coast Hakkakuao

This is review #179 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was easy with plain water, but did require and extra flush or two, suggesting lots of dye. While not as green as my other teals, this ink is strongly green. Unfortunately, the cameras did not want to capture the green. I did correction on some photos, but the scan had the color pretty close already, so I'm going to say the scan is the most accurate.

The line width measurement is one of the lines used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 270µm. (For the curious, with 179 inks measured, the average line width is 289µm.)

The microscope smear was pretty interesting, so I'm including it. Note that it too is missing the green that my eyes could see. The "strands" were especially green.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Hi @LizEF. Your reviews are not only introducing (beautiful teal) fountain pen inks with a nice story part, they are also riddles (what can be the meaning of "we do not need money, we have magic"?) and, not enough so far, they are also nice science experiments!

This Sailor ink seems to be well behaving with next to no feathering and has a nice crystallisation pattern on glass.

Did you know that watching pre-prepared microscopy slides was once the amusement of the upper classes at private social evening meetings? Sure, in the pre-video era! Those slides had encapsulated preparations of diatoms and other spectacular microorganisms, crystals, parts from insects or cross sections of plants mounted on them.

I'm looking forward to a full entertainment set of Liz's EF Dried Ink Patterns with The Magic Kick:drool:

One life!

:)  I didn't intend that to be a riddle, but now you've planted a different interpretation in the back of my brain and heaven knows what will become of it in there...  The other side of the Muirdoor is slowly turning into an interesting place in the back of my brain - people who have trouble suspending disbelief probably won't like it (it violates at least a few laws of physics).

I don't think I've seen a Sailor ink that wasn't well behaved.  They're just a really good ink-maker.

I had no idea, but I'm not at all surprised! :)  Microscopy is fascinating.  And now my YouTube suggestions are full of electron microscope images of bizarre looking creatures - some may have to become characters, or monsters, one day... :D

 You're gonna have a long wait, I'm afraid - I clean the slide after photographing and re-use it...

However, now you've planted another idea - dried ink patterns and magic....  The back of my brain will be amused for quite some time. ;)

Thank you as always @LizEF  for another excellent review.

It's a good thing this colour doesn't call to me too much, as I think the chances of being able to get it, especially here, are slim to none!

  Yeah, I have no idea where Dill found it.  But it's a fairly common color, teal, in all its varieties, so one needn't despair. :)

@LizEF

Lovely color, intriguing use of equines.  🐴👍🏻😊

I'm not so sure about the dry time, but I'm a fan of shading—-and your reviews.  Thanks again!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

There was (is?) one seller on Rakuten that offered this series, and at one point he/she/it was also putting them on eBay concurrently.

I looked pretty hard for these inks elsewhere, and I think I came across (remotely, of course) some store in Hong Kong with a limited selection of colours; but of course it declined to deal with overseas orders and ship to Australia for me.

The colour of Hakkakuao is pretty close to Yamadori in the Shikiori line, and also Sumaura Seaside Blue in the Kobe INK Story line.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Love the microscope slide! I wonder if there are any correlations to be seen between the slides and ink behaviors?

:) I think we'll need many more samples before we can draw any conclusions, though @InesF seems to have a knack for interpreting what's in those slides.

It’s a gift, like being able to read tea leaves. 🔎

  Exactly.  (Though I suspect the gift was acquired at a university...)

OK, maybe it isn't so close to Sumaura Seaside Blue:

Thanks, @A Smug Dill.  Apparently my eyes aren't good at distinguishing between colors in this space - Ku-Jaku and Syo-Ro look nearly identical to me.  I suspect the first five are quintuplets.  #6 was obviously born to the same parents. But Tsuki-yo looks downright out of place - clearly adopted into the family... :)
