What was your last very deliberate pen purchase?

There is a thread about Pelikan pens breeding in secret. I never thought I’d have seven. I have one 8xx, and otherwise mostly Classic 2xx

I’ve been planning on buying a Retro 51 Stealth black fountain pen at a store.  I’m needing to go to one of the two County Courthouses here to deal with property tax on a vehicle.  Nearby is a store called Wild About Harry (Truman).  They have the pen. It’s not the lowest price to pay for this pen. Yet, I can support a really nice retail store, so that’s the plan. Honestly, this pen wasn’t on my radar.  I saw it on the store’s website.

OMAS 361T on its way from Italy. Double sided F nib; flexible and firm.

Add lightness and simplicate.

My last pen was very deliberate.  We traveled to italy and I knew I wanted to buy an Italian pen while there.  I checked out local stores on line in the cities we'd be in and found a beautiful Leonardo Magico DNA at A C Vecchietti.  I was able to visit the store and purchase the pen when we where there.  It's a lovely reminder of our trip.... as is the Pelikan Ductus I got in Berlin and the Visconti Van Gogh I got in Amsterdam the same day we visited the Van Gogh Museum. :)   On a related note.... anyone aware of worthy pens (and pen stores) from either Norway, Denmark or Sweden?  We'll be in Bergen, Copenhagen, and Stockholm this summer.

@MHBru I think it’s fabulous to get pens as souvenirs of cities you visit. And such beauties too. Congratulations on the Leonardo.

Here is a photo of the pen I bought today.

Congratulations.  I just returned from Italy where I had the opportunity to try this pen.  It’s wonderful and every shop owner proudly explained its connection to Leonardo’s history.  I loved the Magico’s and almost bought one at Stilo e Stile but balked.  I’ll probably end up regretting it.  Mario talked to the factory and was going to special order the one I wanted with ruthenium trim.

Enjoy your pen!

I’ve been planning on buying a Kaweco AL Sport in dark red once the cash back rewards got high enough. It was $20.91 today, so I ordered the Kaweco AL in deep red.

Once the rewards build up again, a Kaweco AL Sport in anthracite is the next deliberately planned purchase.

Those are pretty cool pens. I expect you will enjoy them. They are -in my most humble opinion- elegant and appealing though discrete at the same time. If I hadn't already too many pens and were not waiting (and saving) for the supposedly upcoming Kaweco piston filler, they'd be on my wait list.

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

Very well said. There is something about the AL models that is as you said, elegant.  The Rose Gold version is around $46 on amazon.com. Trouble is, I want anthracite next. It’s $65 at the same behemoth seller.

Could you consider your next group of pens, rather than individuals. The anthracite and rose gold seem to be a pair - similar materials and soft colours (there might even be others). Then get them as they come up at good prices, rather than a particular order. If you pass on the Rose Gold at its current price and don't find one so good when it's turn comes that would be frustrating. Like having a goal with some flex built in.

Will work for pens...

@AmandaW you are so wise. I don’t know if I want the rose gold version. But not that long ago, I wasn’t interested in the AL versions. Now I have 4, with the deep red on order.

I’ve got a long wait ahead before I actually get it, but I’ve finally ordered the Nakaya Piccolo Enjoying the Moon Cat (with an added custom design) that I’ve been dreaming of for about three years. I had planned to get it as a reward for finishing my PhD, so on the day I finally became a Dr I ordered it. Working out the details took another week or so but now it’s officially paid for and just a matter of time!

This is the most deliberate pen purchase I’ve ever made (and my first Nakaya)!

That's a truly gorgeous and tasteful pen. May you enjoy it for (many) decades.

And congratulations on your PhD. It is no mean achievement either. Well worth the price you treated yourself to.

Thank you for your kind words! I really can’t wait to see the pen in person ☺️

I was looking at the Levenger on sale items online, and saw the True Writer Classic Americana. Their pens only come with F and M nibs.

The Esterbrook Journaler nib came into my thinking. Their Estie in Scarlet looks like the same material. The Journaler nib currently is available in palladium.  I think the pen looks better with gold. So I asked about when it would be in stock on their contact form.

It would be cheaper to get it with a 1.1mm nib. And that nib would give the line variation I love. The Journaler nib is based on the vintage Esterbrook 9314-M nib. I have a 2314-M nib that is fantastic. I’m not sure the Journaler nib would match that line variation. I looked at reviews. No one reviewing it writes like I do. One was block printing. The other was a tight cursive. I write in a more flowing cursive. The best the nib looked in writing was a video by Azizah at Gourmet Pens. Her writing with the Journaler nib gave me some hope that the nib might be worth it to try.

I have to give it some thought. A nice thing is they are giving away 200 piece puzzles with JFK’s quote about going to the Moon. I love Space, so that would be a nice puzzle to own.

It didnt take long for me to break down and pre-order the new Pelikan Glauco Cambon.  I've been waiting to see if those pens ever made the light of day since they were hinted about back in August 2021.

I just bought my dad a 3 pack of Pilot Varsity pens. He’s been moved to a care facility and asked for some spy novels, word searches, and journals, so I included some pens that are easy to use and aren’t too expensive if a caregiver walks off with one. Who knows, it might broaden someone’s horizon.

Top 5 of 19 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144 IB, Herbin Orange Indien/ Wearingeul Frost

Sailor x Daimaru Central Rockhopper Penguin PGS mini, Sailor Wonder Blue

Parker 88 Place Vendôme IB, Diamine Golden Sands

Salz Peter Pan 18k gold filled filligree fine flex, Waterman Serenity Blue

Pilot Silvern Dragon IB, Iroshizuku Kiri-Same

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery
