What was your last very deliberate pen purchase?

I bought a  Bock #6 compatible chrome  plated steel ultraflex nib from Fountain Pen Revolution. I had been sitting on it for awhile, and then saw a video comparing the steel nib  ( gold got bad reviews) to the Magna Catrta 600 and decided to take another look. There’s a flash sale running  (see my post in Market Watch) so I bit.

I just received a Pilot Justus 95 (F) with the guilloche pattern.  This is such a precise pen for careful, small-scale writing and sketching. I do a fair bit of work in A6 notebooks and this pen really does the trick for writing in those small pages.  My first ink-fill is with Sailor Kiwaguro.

I really did deliberate on this. I read (and re-read) @TheDutchGuy 's  Review at https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/347697-pilot-justus-95-m/I was especially impressed by @A Smug Dill 's terrific writing sample at https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/347697-pilot-justus-95-m/?do=findComment&comment=4274077 and his later comment that he could "put down 14 parallel horizontal lines in a 5mm square area."

This is a satisfying writing tool.

Congratulations @Mechanical  you did your research, and made a good purchase. I think I remember that post by Smug getting those lines in that small space.

Yes, there were a number of revealing things in that writing sample.  Obviously the Fine point is capable of very fine lines.  But also the written characters showed a lot of exact control.  I got excited looking at the level of detail... which is sometimes exactly what I want.  The "Hard to Soft" adjustment is a nice extra and is even more fun than I thought it would be. :-)

Thank you!

I'm delighted to hear it helped, and glad that you're enjoying your new purchase. May the pen serve you well.

I’ve learned a lot from your postings!  I can’t overstate the value of your nice writing samples and the amount of detail you provide in your reviews.

I was looking at Hightide hour glasses. Jet Pens had some. I saw what else Hightide had, and saw a fountain pen.

I thought about it. The turquoise hour glass would look good on the blue marble melamine tray, also by Hightide. But the pen, it is named Attaché, and comes in four marble acrylic patterns that have some translucency. Nib choice though, just F.

Ate, then looked back at the website.  Thought about it.  Finally I decided. I chose the blue one, plus an A6 Life Pistachio notebook, and a Uni Style Fit refill in brown black for my newest Uni Style Fit Meister 3 in brown. This model is discontinued.

The fountain pen has attaché in script on the cap with Hightide underneath it. The cap screws on to post. No converter is included, and it takes short international cartridges.

edit: maybe some day I’ll get the hour glass and tray. They would look good together if their colors are anywhere close to the website images.

  • 1 month later...

I had been considering this particular pen for at least a year, and it finally got to the last one in stock, so when my husband asked me to choose a pen for our anniversary gift (he’s getting a guitar, we’re eventually getting a new induction stove, but are too sick to go look at them right now) I chose the Goldspot exclusive Nahvalur (sp) Mariana Trench with the 14k blue nib, in medium because that’s what was left. It is my first modern ebonite pen (I was iffy about it, but @Mechanical’s enthusiasm for them won me over). The ebonite reminds me of Waterman’s bluegreen ripple and the blue nib is 👩🏽‍🍳😘

That's an interesting looking pen (I just looked it up Google).  Ebonite has just such a "warm" feel to it.

I'd be curious, though about how well the colored nib will hold up.  I have several Safaris/al-Stars with the black nibs and they've been fine.  But early on I bought a Platinum Plaisir, back when they did the coated nibs to match the pen color -- and it was HORRIBLE.  After a while the coating started flaking off and I was afraid of it contaminating one (or more) of my ink bottles.

I know people rave about the 3776 pens, but after the experience with that low-end Platinum pen, I'm really hesitant to buy another (even though I've liked the look of some of the 3776 colors) -- especially a much more expensive one.

And the sad part is that early on, a lot of people on FPN said that Platinum made the best nibs of any of the three major Japanese brands....

This is a picture of the MB22 and the 14...mentioned a few posts before...just 14 nothing extra. ...HOWEVER.

The marbled blue Pelikan 200 means I now have three, one from each era...W.Germany '85-91, a '91-97, and this '98 to now version.

My wife paid €5 for the inkwell stand and the '90's marbled blue 200. Ink is Penman Ruby.

Why the picture is 180 out is beyond me, but at least it's not upside down.

Now that it can't be read...Parker is what the inside of the lid says.

@Penguincollector, such nice colors!  I have scrutinized the Nahvalur pens many times, attracted by those round portholes 🙂.   And apparently they make their own nibs?! Let us know how you like it…

Also, get well soon!

I have a Parker IM with a blue steel nib, a Lamy Z57 and a Monteverde Impressa with black PVD, and all have been great so far. The only plating that I have ever had issues with has been on one very old Pelikan steel nib that was once gold plated.

The Platinum pens I prefer are all from the late 1960s-‘70s, and they’re a different beast than the current nibs, all semi flex inlaid nibs. I have one UEF from my 1980s, and that one is really stiff- if it were a larger width I’d call it a manifold. I think you would like their pocket pens and Honest line,  as we seem to have similar tastes in pen size. The 3776 is a big pen to me.  This Nahvalur is much bigger than my usual size, longer than my AL-Stars- but it’s design really called to me.

Thank you, I’ll definitely let you know what I think when it arrives and I ink it up.

I wasn't familiar with this model, so I did a quick Google search.  And now want the pink and black one (and sort of want the yellow and black one as well, but can't justify the price on that one at ALL :crybaby:).

I have been working toward a major work milestone for over 10 years. For much of that time it wasn’t clear if I would ever reach that goal. I decided if I made the goal I would buy a specific Montblanc. Much to my surprise I accomplished the goal over the summer. I then started searching for the pen knowing it might take months to find. I even considered buying a different pen to commemorate the occasion. Also to my surprise, an old pen acquaintance listed the exact pen on eBay only a couple weeks after I started looking. After many years of planning and effort the pen is now in my collection. Now I need a new long term goal.

I’m planning on buying the MD fountain pen that has a silver tone cap and cream body. I want to buy it at retail. A pen friend said she would go with me to the store, but in November. Maybe it can be Fountain Pen Day. That would be cool. The shop’s online site shows three in stock.

Congratulations!

For accomplishing a 10 year goal, a Montblanc is well-deserved reward.  And, for future goals, I'll note that there are always more Montblancs out there. :-)

So which MB did you get? I've gotten a number of MB's to celebrate events.
