Stub O'Day Part Two

Bock doesn't make a gold #8 stub or italic nib, as far as I can tell. However, when custom-ground, these nibs can make outstanding writers for broad nib calligraphic scripts. My latest Leonardo pen has such a nib, ground in house, I believe. The pen is an Audace Art Nouveau LE.

These particular nibs are made especially for Leonardopens. They are shaped a bit different from other Bock #8 gold nibs. Here is a side by side of a Leonardo Bock #8 nib and one purchased from fpnibs dot com and custom-ground for me.

Part II

To Stub O' the Day: So glad to read that you bought a pen at the store on The Strand. In 2001 I was in London for 8 weeks and purchased a Parker Greenwich Special Edition from Pen Friend on The Strand. It is now fitted with a cursive italic customized by Nibs.com (John Mottishaw) some years later. One of my favorites and I have to say it was a difficult choice of which pen to purchase that day, but I wanted a memory of my visit to London to keep.

In another thread I mentioned missing out on Montblanc Winter Glow ink. The super marvelous @Penguincollector shared the ink swatch online results using Winter Glow’s hex code found in @visvamitra’s review. I own one of the inks in the results. So here is a pen that qualifies for this thread with writing on 182|Mnemosyne notebook paper. It’s my first use of the Lamy Safari Strawberry pen. I swapped nibs so it could have a 1.1mm italic nib.

I discovered, which shouldn’t be a surprise really, that all stub nibs aren’t equal. I got several on AliExpress. It took a lot of effort to push it down a DeLike New Moon feed. I don’t think it ever went all the way. It sort of split, but still wrote. Today, I wanted to log the pen and ink in two notebooks. The pen was about out of ink.

Birmingham Pens recently had a sale on Nemosine nibs. I got a 5-pack of #5 1.1mm stub nibs. I got one out to switch on the DeLike pen. After needing grip material, I finally got the nib out. Expecting the same effort, I started putting the Nemosine nib over the feed. It easily went into place. Wow! And the line it writes has more line variation than the AliExpress nib. I filled the pen with the same ink. I’ll try to do some writing samples and post here. I really like the looks of the DeLike New Moon green marble pen. It’s now the best version of itself.

The light is wrong to show off the pen material. It’s such a pretty pen. Now it has an excellent stub nib. I usually write on old and new Tomoe. This is Leuchtturm paper where I log pens and inks.

@Doc Dan I don’t think it’s a sickness, unless that was tongue in cheek. It’s very much a preference. I prefer stub and italic nibs. I tried and tried to get the nib out of my green Jinhao 82, but so far it won’t budge. I got the same bent nib out of my blue Jinhao 82. It was inked, while the green pen hasn’t been. I do have a no name 1.1mm nib in a coffee brown Jinhao 82. I’m not sure if I should swap it out or not. If all three Jinhao 82 pens got a Nemosine nib, I’d have one left in the #5 size. I have three in the #6 size that I also bought along with a 0.8mm nib which I put in a Kaigelu pen.

  • When I first started using fountain pens it wasn't long before I learned about italic and obliques. Since then I have alway only used cursive italics or obliques or stubs like TWSBI or Lamy 1.5mm. Love the lines.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

I've not tried the Jinhao pens, so I can't speak to them. I've read that they are good, though.

They are good pens. They look like Sailor Pro Gear Slim pens. People have fun swapping the finials.  I did that with the blue and green pens.  I put them back last night. The coffee brown version has sparkles in it. I won’t be getting any more of them, I expect.

A new pen arrived today. It’s a Sailor Compass HighAce Neo with 1.0mm stub nib. The converter is sold seamlessly, and comes in several colors. I wrote in a Leuchtturm 1917 notebook.

I chose this pen as the pen of the day. It was empty, so it got a refill of a different ink.

Very nice pairing @USG

This is actually the second Stub of the Day thread. The first one got “full”, so this one was created.

Stilo & Stile is offering special nib grinds on #6 Steel JoWo nibs for purchase along with selected fountain pens. I bought this Radius1934 Settimo with a Broad Cursive Italic nib ground by Joshua Lax. I have never met or communicated with Mr. Lax. He's based in Brooklyn and doesn't get to the San Francisco Pen Show, which is the only one I attend. However, he is trained by Richard Binder, and his Cursive Italic grind, to me, is indistinguishable from Binder's, which is to say, crisper than most and still very smooth writing. I'm loving how this pen writes. I think it's pretty good looking too.

Happy writing!

David

Oooooh...that's right up there with "Cacao Du Bresil" for the greyish-brown tones!
I like that one, and Kaweco inks are usually nicely lubricated.
I may have to place an order...
