Sailor Pro Gear - Nib Replacement?

GNL

Recommended Posts

Hello Fellow Sailor Lovers - I have a Sailor Pro Gear that originally came with a music nib.  This nib wrote beautifully, but I loved the pen so much I wanted to convert it from a once-in-a-while writer to a daily writer.  I hired a nibmeister to convert it to a medium nib, which turned out to be impossible because the ball tipping material wasn’t there.  He reduced its size and made it smoother, but it’s not working for me at all.

I’m open to suggestions, including nib replacement (is this possible on a Pro Gear?), alternate nibmeisters, etc.  I don’t want to end up with a stub or anything unusual.  I prefer standard medium or fine nibs, or perhaps a smooth cursive nib like Lamy offers.

Thanks,

GNL

Current favorite pen: Montblanc 144 Meisterstuck purchased at Art Brown in 1984. After decades, every part has been replaced except the nib. Still a gorgeous writing instrument, rock-solid reliable, gives me hours of pleasure to use.

Current favorite ink: Colorverse Supernovs

Current favorite paper: Romeo notepads

have you considered looking for someone with the opposite problem (has an M or F and wants an MS)? the music nibs are harder to find, at least in the US, so you might have takers if you offered a trade...

the Sailor MS nib I own (gold plated steel, in a Young Profit), is essentially a broad stub, unless the tip geometry of the 21k nib is radically different from my steel variant, making it into a medium or even fine shouldn't be a problem...

is yours a single slit/two tine type (conventional open nib), or a double slit/three tine like the other Japanese makers favor?

if it has three tines that severely limits the amount that the tip width can be reduced.

another thing to consider if still attempting a re-grind is that the feed may be a high flow variant for the music nib and could lead to very wet writing if the tip size is changed.

David-

So many restoration projects...
