Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Robert Oster Bass Straight

This is review #175 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was quick and easy, but took longer than expected for a pale color so there must be quite a bit of dye in there. This is a turquoise blue with a slight green lean, but definitely not enough to be teal. All the images are pretty close, and which is closest will probably depend on your own screen...

The line width measurement is one of the lines used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 320µm. (For the curious, with 175 inks measured, the average line width is 289µm.)

The slide smear was interesting, so I'm including an image with samples!  When initially applied, the ink spread out quite evenly under the slip cover, but then I set it on the microscope platform to capture later, and the ink drew back together as it dried.  I don't know if this is the reason for the interesting images, but as you can see, it shows some crystal-ish structures, and in the two insets (both from the edge of the slip cover), some "dry lake bed" effect (you may need to load the image at full size to see this - the "cracks" are dark in the top inset, but let light through in the lower inset). In the main image and the top-right inset, we see the same rainbow appearance as in some previous inks.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Really nice @LizEF. :thumbup:thumb I really like the colour, plus 2 second dry time, wow that's something. That must be something with all the action packed adventures....

I detected some sheen in the screen shot, first line. Does it sheen?

Those funky crystal lines really are so cool! You can use them for Quin's adventures.... ;)

I don't normally like this color, but there's something really appealing about this one.

It did sheen when the feed was super-saturated, but not in normal writing.  I think from a wetter pen, you'd see plenty of sheen.

 We'll have to see if the back of my brain can come up with something.  They look sort of like inky fjords. :D

Nice color, great story.  I think Krishna Causal (a perennial in my Wality 52P) is similar.

Do you keep the test ink in your Prera all week, and write with it?  Thanks again!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

New to me, but a google image search confirms similarity.

I keep it in for the entire review period and use it for my bullet journal, regular journal, notes, and the occasional logic puzzle.  The review periods at present are:

  • Record review Monday morning, clean pen, ink in afternoon
  • Record review Saturday morning, clean pen, ink in the afternoon (~5 days)
  • Record review Wednesday morning, clean pen, ink in the afternoon (~4 days)
  • go back to Monday (~5 days)

(Next year I plan to change to weekly. Right now I post reviews every other Friday, too, but I'll switch to just Tuesdays.)

And now I am wondering what kind of bass this ink refers to: bass guitar?  Fiddle?  Fish? Basswood?

(Though I never saw a tree that color).

:D Dunno, though there is a Bass Strait - so maybe it's the color of the water there?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bass_Strait

Bass Strait (/bæs/) is a strait separating the island state of Tasmania from the Australian mainland (more specifically the coast of Victoria, with the exception of the land border across Boundary Islet). The strait provides the most direct waterway between the Great Australian Bightand the Tasman Sea, and is also the only maritime route into the economically prominent Port Phillip Bay.

But then why is the ink named Bass Straight:unsure:

My guess: whimsy.  Either that, or an overly aggressive autocorrect?
