Sailor Ink Studio 735 Review

Fifth ever review, last one for this weekend!

I bought a sample of this ink because it was a pretty color and I was wondering if it would be like a lighter Lamy Dark Lilac. Well, I don't think it is, but it IS VERY PRETTY to me. It was like a brighter version of Sailor Manyo Akebi with less sheen.

This paper is all smudged up but not because the ink smears--I put waaaay too much on my first ink splotch (not pictured), touched it, then got fingerprints all over the paper, then tried to wipe off the excess and spread it around some more. Now I have this shiny greenish-gold paper reminding me of my follies.

Anyway, I didn't know this was a color I wanted, but I definitely like this dark-yet-bright cool-toned magenta color. However, at Studio prices, I'm not sure I will get around to buying it. I'd love any recommendations on something similarly vibrant and well-behaved with fantastic shading. I think I need to do a little more sampling to convince myself there's nothing like it and it's worth buying.

Thank you @dragondazd for your 5 Sailor ink reviews!

Good work, well done!

This 735 is the most interesting for me. Its a lovely colour with pretty sheen, as I see on your photos.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) Sailor inks are hard to get in Europe.

I find it interesting that inks of the 1xx and 2xx series do find some use. I'm always tempted to take an ink with average intensity and add as much water as necessary to get a pale colour. Is there something "out of the box" you get with a Sailor 1xx or 2xx you can't simulate?

One life!

First I will confess that while I am somewhat interested, I don't have the tools to do exact dilution tests. I'd be very interested in knowing if inks with an outline are dual shaders in hiding (Monteverdi birthday cake?)

What has appeared most popular in the low numbers has been the multi chromatic inks. I suspect many dyes in the low numbers are being used in the other numbers, but at those concentrations it is hard or maybe impossible to achieve the dual shading

in the attached photo I use a glass dip pen but I assure you Haha/Nekoyanagi achieve those distinct colors with a nib.  With higher concentrations, maybe you can't get the separation.

I suspect multichromatics are a happy accident that used to be discarded in the past but it is possible to be deliberate and they are putting something in to help it happen, which means dilution of higher numbers with water will not work.

Thank you @dragondazd - yes, dual/multi chromatic shading is a good reason why those inks can be interesting. Indeed, it may had been discovered by chance. For some colours a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic dye had to be mixed and, invisible in saturated ink formulations, they may separate while being sucked along paper fibres.

Thanks for the nice photo of those shaders! You covered the multi-chromas very well!

Thanks for the review, @dragondazd! :)  I like this one the best of the ones you've posted.  I went to InkSwatch.com to see what matches they had, and it looks quite different there - much darker.  I like the brighter rendering in your images better. :)

Interesting. it looks like the top rectangle was sampled from a redder part of the lower rectangle.  Yesterday I was thinking the ink looked darker and murkier  coming out of the nib, but in looking today, it's still bluer than inkswatch.  Here it is on TR.PXL_20220405_145717126.thumb.jpg.82810c327289f7e37bdf7858764d4d83.jpg

I think this ink is calling to my pink lamy.

Yeah, quite different.  Perhaps it reacts to paper, like many others in this line.  There's just no substitute for trying it out yourself.

Nice review.  I like most of the mid tone to dark Ink Studio inks I have tried, and bought full sizes of a few.  They all seem to be on the wet side, with such beautiful shading.  I think my favorite is 280, which is a golden wheat shade, and then 243, which is a soft, muted light (but not too light) blue.  I have full size bottles of both on their way to me.  Will have to get a sample of 735, not a huge fan of purple ink but it looks so good in your review!

Be curious bout 252. I dont think i ve seen it reviewed. If its not too pale and readable…. In real writing.

Totally usable. I could do a review of that once I get through some of my new vinta samples. And compare it to Birmingham chrysanthemum

Cool. I love sailor ha ha. But it feels like writing w invisible ink. It dries beautifully.  I look forward to your 252 review.

I had a sample, it’s definitely readable but is on the pale side….though I only tried it in a very fine nib.  I think it, like all of these inks, would perform best in a broader fine or larger nib.
