What Pen did you clean out today?

Thank you for your reply Ruth.  I've never used any saturated inks if I'm honest so I've never come across these problems. I remember BSB's reputation from when I was around some years ago. I was very nearly tempted to try Noodlers Black, but I think I'll stick with Aurora Black for now, despite it being hard(ish) to come by in the UK. In my all be it limited experience, if a pen doesn't work with Aurora Black it needs to be looked at / fixed.

Have not tried Aurora Black.  I'm not a huge fan of Noodler's Black (I prefer Noodler's Heart of Darkness better because it dries a little faster than Noodler's Black).

Today I cleaned a Pilot Custom 742(MS nib), a Montegrappa Venetia, and a new Leonardo twice, while trying to find an ink that was dry enough to give me crisp italic hairlines and was the "right" color.

😧😲 😮  You 'gaslighted' 'gaslit?'  the Diamine.  Everyone knows Diamine 'plays nicely' with everything! 😁

Looks like it was leaving residue behind piston

'It was leaving'  or You were leaving?    🤣 🤣

Na I just replaced with a nice dark blue. That and let the stuff dry in the converter leaving residue behind. 😛🖋😝

Today I cleaned out a Parker 51 Vacumatic, possibly sooner than necessary. That is, when I cleaned it out there seemed to be ink left in it (compared to other P51 Vacumatics I have used up during the past few months) but it wouldn't write, I suppose because the ink was sludgy from sitting around for a couple of weeks. I think I could have written at least another A4 page with it, if I had sucked up a little water, sloshed it around a little, waited a while, and sloshed it around again, to revive the ink supply.

Maybe that wouldn't have worked well, I don't know. I'm open to other suggestions for using up more of the residual ink in this situation.

My solution is to remind myself that ink is inexpensive, and I have a major investment in other beautiful fountain pens that deserve to be inked and used, and that I will enjoy re-discovering how wonderful they are. I really shouldn't delay the pleasure.

This works for me sometimes. 😁

Happy writing!

When my car (it's old) gets low of fuel, if I don't turn on the ignition and leave it for a few seconds for the fuel pump to get it's act together, I have to wind on the starter for longer than usual before she starts. I guess it's similar with pens, they're saying, 'Er, I'm getting low on ink here if you don't do something soon 'There will be trouble ahead...' 🙂

I've got more pens than inks at the minute so, I just normally fill with the same ink (as I did yesterday with my Beijing Jin Xing (Diamine Sherwood Green)  Or I flush it, and put it away. My inks are so inexpensive I concern myself with the last few drops.

Today it's been the Sheaffer Snorkel Clipper, F-ish nib.  For some reason, it didn't like vintage Skrip Permanent Royal Blue I put in it, and got cloggy.  But when I went to flush it out, it seemed to still have a lot of ink in it.... :(

For some reason, the Snorkel Special (the bottom rung level Snorkel) I got at the same time seems to be doing just fine (both were repaired a few weeks ago at the Baltimore-Washington Pen Show).  Just refilled it a day or two ago with modern Skrip Blue.

The Snorkel Special doesn't know it's 'the bottom rung level Snokel' 🙂

I've just purchased 2 vintage No Nonsense pens off ebay to go with the fine italic I already own. So it looks like I'll be getting the syringe out as the price of the converter these days is around the same as the two pens cost. 😲

True, and it *is* still a Snorkel....

Of course maybe I should try a different ink in the Snorkel Clipper next time....

I think a change of ink would be a good idea... although Sheaffer Black carts in my No Nonsense F Italic seems pretty free flowing....

I don't disagree with this, I'm sure I have more ink than I will use in this life. I just didn't want to refill the pen; I guess my poorly expressed point was that it takes a lot longer (for me) to clean out a P51 Vacumatic when there is a sludge of ink inside than when it has been written really dry, so I was trying to think of a way to keep it writing until it was actually dry. Because cleaning pens can be a tedious endeavor.

At that point it wasn't writing at all, and my choice was to either juice it or clean it. I wasn't sure how to juice it, so I cleaned it. Not really intended as a complaint, just musing on possibilities.

Sorry, I'm a little confused..... Are you saying you wasn't sure how to refill the pen ??  I've never had a Vac, so I can't help there, but I'm sure there are loads of videos on Youtube that could help.

No, by "juice it" I was referring to this:

I’m cleaning the (I think) last TWSBI Eco that has been waiting. The area where the piston head sits while the pen is filled tends to stain, though I’ve kept at it to remove that residual dry ink.

I cleaned my (black) No Nonsense (with the F Italic nib) when I 'borrowed' the Sheaffer Black cart to use in my new to me, No Nonsense promotional pen with a M nib.   The cartridge is probably at least 10 years old and performs flawlessly in both pens.  Would a cartridge that old be the 'original' Sheaffer Skrimp? It's a very good 'Black' (IMO)

Today I cleaned out a Pelikan M605 green and white with EF nib, the ink was Iroshizuku Chiku-rin. I never had a pen clean out so easily. It hadn't absolutely been written dry, there was still ink in the feed if not in the barrel, but I only had to draw water into the barrel about 4 times before it was running clear. I guess that ink is not very saturated, which would probably account for it.

Nothing today, but after finally getting totally fed up of it not writing consistently and leaking, that and skipping no matter what I did. It is currently drying out, awaiting storage

I just cleaned out my Moonman S1 (fude nib). The fude nib is so gushy I found myself running out of ink in mere minutes with a converter. :gaah:

Now the question is do I refill it or do I put it into storage 🤔. I will need to de-ink all my pens in the coming month in preparation for a long-distance move.
