And I'm wondering if there is a cheaper alternative to printed backing...

I have a box of Avery 8.5x11" labels, I'm thinking of trying them for backing material. I haven't yet, but preliminary ink tests don't look bad at all - they inkjet printer (and laserjet) capable, which usually means bleeding isn't too bad. You could whip up some creative template if you were in the mood, or print a copyright, or return address, or whatnot.

I can get 3 photo backs covered from a single sheet, so about 12 cents CAD for the backing and about 13 cents CAD for the photo... pretty cheap if it works. Send me your address and I'll hit you with one so you can offer a second opinion. Actually, snyone else wants to offer an opinion also sent me your address via PM... I've got a box of old holiday photos sitting right next to me... you'll get a surprise photo.

The only catch is you need to offer your comments on it - how well the backing held up, if it looks ok... if you notice any ink issues... &c.

FYI - Vintage card source: The Farnsworth House in Gettysburg Pennsylvania USA has piles of NOS vintage cards of Gettysburg battles sites, etc. However, 75 cents apiece is too high for the sheer number of cards I post (my target is 25 cents or less). But for posting to a few special people, you might pick up a few if you are passing through.

Here's an interesting post on making postcards from photos:

http://www.the2buds.com/suph2pc.htm

Have any of you used the postcard backing found here:

I am using those for my photos. I sent 6 out last week, but haven't heard whether or not they arrived. They seem to do OK with fountain pen ink. Maybe if someone has received one of mine, they can let you know how they held up in the mail.

PS: Received another postcard from Suggie, a couple days ago. Thanks.

Avery, the company that makes self stick labels, makes a postcard form that I've used successfully to make picture postcards from my own photos. They even have a program that you can download and will somehow or other automatically get onto our word processing program. Just do your photo on one side, print the necessary postcard format stuff on the other, write your card, stamp and mail it.

Looks like a good product and the price isn't too bad - looking forward to feedback on quality etc.

Looks like a good idea.

Does anyone know if they can be purchased in the UK?

Just received two cards: sdcurnow and Angus from Shetland (sorry, couldn't recall your username)

Sending my batch out tomorrow: inkypete, pmorin, DRP, kabe

then stopping for awhile to sort out my visa and go on vacation.

also, people I've exchanged postcards with in the past: I've lost track of a few addresses (er... TINman, Judybug... HDoug...?) due to shoddy organizational skills. Sorry about that.

I guess I'm old-school when it comes to postcard backing :) -- I'm using Strathmore bristol board. Besides being ink-friendly, its archival quality seems good, as can be seen on old cartoon originals that were drawn on Strathmore brand bristol, and are still in fine shape (e.g. 1920's "Mutt and Jeff"s, or George Herriman's "Krazy Kat").

One 22 x 30 inch sheet of vellum-finish 2-ply costs me 2 dollars, and I can get twenty-six 4 x 6 cards out of it.

Postcards go out tomorrow to: LeftyCalligrapher, Eilu, Okami, penburg, deauville, blopplop, Orangesam, sdcurnow, drp, & The Moose.

Received a postcard today from The Moose. Crazy stuff, eh buddy?

OK, the great Avery Labels (05165 8.5x11 Full Sheet) on the back of photographs experiment has commenced. The lables are smooth to write on, don't show any feathering (if there is feathering occurring), dry quickly, and have handled MB Green, PR Burgundy Mist, Pilot Iroshizuku Yama Buda, J.Herbin Lie de The, and Caran d'Ache Sunset very well. Granted, these inks are generally fairly well behaved, but never before on a postcard for me. The labels are a touch thin but cover well - you can just barely see the line of information most photo labs print on the back in black.

The second half received a wax seal when I got brave enough to try (wasn't sure if the heat would warp the photo or melt the emulsion). As I was using photos I had printed from several batches by several places, they were different brands (Kodak, Fuji, Konika) and some gloss, matte, and a lustre - all survived trial by fire.

All outgoing postcards are from this initial test batch. I've started using the trick of lightly rubbing some paraffin over the FP ink to prevent any smearing due to water in transit.

I still have 2 left for anyone else that is interested - sorry for anyone I volunteered to guinea pig receiving one :ninja: (Feedback on condition upon arrival appreciated.)

Cards are coming in...

Thanks InkyPete.

On this latest batch sent yesterday, I broke the rules a little bit. I got a huge batch of greeting cards that I'll never use in real life. So my FPN friends are getting them instead. My mother would understand. I'm also getting a large batch of vintage San Diego post cards for correspondence.

I'm ready to correspond again.
