Postcard Swap

Hey U.S. friends, how often does your Postal Service change the design of stamps? Canada Post puts out new stamps every few months or so.

About the same for popular denominations such as standard first-class stamps, but not for the short-lived 27-cent postcard rate. If the 29-cent rate lasts a while, we may see more variations.

Is that a bedroom or a bomb shelter?

Depends on the traveler's frame of mind, I guess.

It's the Del-Ray Motel, 2 miles west of Indianapolis, where every room features a fan. Don't be alarmed by Bubba -- he must be one of the "friendly people" (emphasis theirs).

What's the ETA on postcards?

The voice of this guitar of mine, at the awakening of the morning, wants to sing its joy;

I sing to your volcanoes, to your meadows and flowers, that are like mementos of the greatest of my loves;

If I am to die away from you, may they say I am sleeping, and bring me back home.

Received an unsigned card from Wisconsin which I think is sent by BigErn. Thanks!

Yes, can I make a plea for a legible signature ...... I have had to do detective work on postmarks in the past!

(A date is helpful, too :) )

Most of my correspondents are very good, I have to say, and I am always pleased to hear from you all.

(And apologies to anyone to whom I 'owe' a reply!)

Thanks

Question

How do you keep the ink from smearing on a postcard??? Seems to need dry overnight and then, might still smear!

I rub parriffin over what I wrote and send the card on. Works great!

That works after the ink is already dry, but not really while it's still wet on the card.

I'd like to be included on this list. Forgive me if this isn't the correct way to join, I can't make it through 70 odd pages. :)

You might need to glue some regular paper over the back of the card. Most Post cards have a stupid coating that only ballpoint goo adheres to.

I keep a paper towel folded into quarters in my journal - I frequently throw postcards in between the towel layers and let it act as a blotter. I also will sometimes throw the postcards into a wire CD rack to give them a couple days to dry. I've also been known to throw them into the toaster oven on low heat for 10 or 15 minutes. I once used a cook's torch on some coated Christmas cards I had used PR Sherwood Green on - the scorch marks made them all the more festive :yikes: (which is why I use the toaster oven now if I'm in a hurry).

I do find some inks dry very fast even on awful postcards, while others take a long time.

The trouble I have with most of the post cards/cards is that my nib width doubles with some of the really bad coatings. A digital camera, and some Xerox #65 stock combined with a colour printer should ease that problem once I use up my stack o'cards.

Thanks for the advice, I found that one I left sitting overnight to dry was still wet and so is now a smeary mess on the way to it's destination - can't get any worse since it has a coat of candle wax on it and it's still legible - oh well :headsmack:

The papertowel idea is great and gluing paper sounds like it may be a good idea for some of them.

I forgot to add that on those postcards that have a shinny coating I take a extra fine foam sandpaper and lightly rub off the shinny coating on the card.
