Today I am mailing cards to Robert Hughes and diplomat. The holidays are fun, but they side-tracked me from sending cards. Today is the first Monday in January - time to get back to normal! If I owe anybody else a card -or if you just want a card from Louisiana, PM me.

One of my 2009 Resolutions is to become a better correspondent, so I am going to jump right in. I'm in Philadelphia, PA and travel to Hong Kong with some regularity, but I've also amassed a stash of non-geographic postcards. PM me and let me know if you would like to receive one (from Philly or otherwise).

Gee, a legitimate excuse to lay down some more ink? And send it to someone who would mutually appreciate the Obvious Wonderousness of fountain pens and fine ink?

Count me in!!

I'm located in Toowoomba, Queensland, in Australia so send forth your PMs and I'll send forth a postcard. :)

I write, therefore I...write a little more.

Fred, loved your latest postcard. Sometimes I take Dory (the lurcher in my avatar) racing at greyhound tracks, she loves it, one time she even raced against other tripods.

Is it too late to participate? So many pages this thread!

I am located in LA, CA but will be traveling in a few weeks so let me know if you want a postcard!

While we don't have any "rules," and I have no official status, I usually take on the task of pointing out the following:

The usual protocol is that you look through this thread and identify someone(s) with whom you would like to exchange cards. You PM that person and offer to PM your address. They PM you back with their address and you PM them back with your address.

That way you get to solicit postcards from whomever you choose based on whatever criteria you choose.

You haven't seen so many funny names 'til you've paged through an Australian atlas! :)

Heck, we even have a town with a name that's all numerals: 1770.

I replied by postcard to a question from one of my overseas friends about my postcode (or Zipcode as the US Postal Service calls it). So I thought I'd post my response here as well.

Decades ago, the US Post Office adopted five-digit numbers for each post office, with the first two digits being areas of the United States, and the last three assigned to the various post offices. It was called the Zipcode, which I found out was an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan. Four digits were added to the method, which narrows delivery location to a portion of a street or the like. Most handwritten correspondence you (and I) see to the USA uses only the five digits, but adding the other four probably speeds delivery and reduce error.

So that's why I use a longer code than others you send. You can go back to sleep, now. Happy carding!

I've just learnt something new. Off to read the link now to find out more.

Fred, I'd always wondered why some people only used a shorter zip code and others gave a longer one. At first I'd thought it might have been to do with size of city resulting in the longer code, but friends in smaller places use the longer code too.

I popped into town today, so some more postcards have gone off to all those who have requested them. Plus I've still got a few left over and lots of Cheshire ones if anyone wants a Cheshire one.

I wondered, too, Carrie!

From Wikipedia:

The ZIP code is the system of postal codes used by the United States Postal Service. The letters ZIP, an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan, are properly written in capital letters and were chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently, and therefore more quickly, when senders use the code. The basic format consists of five numerical digits. An extended ZIP + 4 code includes the five digits of the ZIP code, a hyphen, and four more digits that determine a more precise location than the ZIP code alone.

If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love you; But if you really make them think, they'll hate you.

By the way, Roger, you win the prize for the address that requires the most space on the back of a postcard! :roflmho:
