Postcard Swap

On page 1 of this very long thread, there is a list of people who want to exchange post cards. But the list is now four years old. What we really need is an updated list.

At one point, somebody created a shared Google Docs spreadsheet.

https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Avte-Tpss6tSdEkyVjZpNGlYc3I3aGZwM0QtYWp5WXc&hl=en_US#gid=0

The purpose being, to let others know if you were still active or had stopped (permenantly or temporarily). It did not include addresses, but member names, cities & countries for those interested in specific areas.

It was last modified June 16th, so I am not sure how up to date it is. I don't know how well that would work, as I don't think there's any way of easily telling how many people who stopped swapping postcards bothered to state that on the spreadsheet.

Just thought I would throw that out there.

Has anyone else noticed how participation has dwindled on this, the postcard swap thread? If you go back two pages, you've gone back two years! We need a new strategy to keep participant information fresh and easily accessible, because this thread is too topheavy with former (i.e., non-) participants. New people to the swap are discouraged because they don't want to wade through 2,500 posts on this list to find those who are participating.

Ideas?

Fred

I agree. Maybe it's time to erase the chalkboard and start over.

I'm still active. Have slowed done a bit. Very busy with family and work. However when they made us use the Post Office I found it rather tedious to post. But starting over would probably be the simplest way to revitalize the swaps!

Perhaps we should always post a link to a file offsite which can be maintained, and make sure such a post appears a couple of times on every page of this thread. See pmorin's post above. However, we must post regularly, directing swappers to the offsite file.

Fred,

That sounds a good idea! I checked the google spreadsheet when I last posted.thumbup.gif

Can I register my interest also?

Postcard would be coming from London, UK (Blighty, Across the Pond, &c, &c)

I can supply the tackiest of royal family/corgis/red phoneboxes (and buses, and soldiers) if required, or try something a little more.. classy.

Happy to receive snail mail from anywhere. I've probably got fewer personal letters in my life than fingers on a hand!

Re. Your problem of old/defunct swappers, surely the main issue is whether it is a google spreadsheet or updated 1st post, people who stop swapping might not also make the effort to say so?

I'm not sure what your procedures are but if you tend to PM to exchange addresses then people could post here/edit the spreadsheet to indicate if someone they PMd has decided against it/not responded. Obviously without any criticism of said person, but to let others know not to try until further notice?

An idea would be to add an additional column to the spreadsheet and call it something like "Aug 2011 update" and whoever is still happy to carry on playing could put a YES in it.

I think to accomplish the goal of a more up-to-date group of participants, a new sticky Postcard Swap thread should begin with a link to this old thread in the first post, plus a link to an off site spreadsheet file, and then "unsticky" this old thread. But a few more details are in order for ongoing housekeeping.

PM me or respond here if you would like postcards from Alaska, various states I travel to, or occasionally something from my small collection of vintage cards.

I'm interested in postcards from anywhere except Alaska!

OK, I'm in. I would love postcards from anywhere. I am in North Carolina. PM me for address.

And for those of you who are real postcard fanatics, as I am, may I suggest Postcrossing. Although I now have 3 cards stuck traveling to Russia and my mail box is very unhappy. :bawl:

  • 2 weeks later...

I would love to exchange some post cards. I'm in Europe and can send a few from some of my travels around the world, just throw a message my way.

This Postcrossing activity is awesome! Why don't we just participate in this activity or ask that they create a subgroup?

FWIW, I added myself to the spreadsheet - I think I joined up after it was created. I'm still exchanging, and happy to add more people to my 'send' list if you want a postcard from Lexington.

Sample Request: I really really want to try Diamine Steel Blue. I will trade you samples!

Well I have updated in this thread a couple of times over the years as well as the google doc that I believe FredRydr set up.

And once again I'm here to say, drop me a PM if you'd like to swap PC's. I'm here in northern California and would love to receive

cards from anywhere -

cheers

...the google doc that I believe FredRydr set up....

Nope. That good idea was someone else's.

I think I have the answer, and will give it a shot in a new thread. Later.

I adore Postcrossing! I've been using it for more than 5 years now.

As for 3 to Russia... bummer. They take forever if they get registered at all. Do you know about the little check-box on your profile that says "check if you prefer to send to repeated countries?" I have mine UNchecked so that I'll never have more than one going to Russia and China at once. I actually did an entire blog post about my frustration with that check-box.

Really. I thought that meant repeat countries EVER. Hmmm.

Remember the day we got 6 'extra' cards to send. ALL 6 of mine were to Russia. These are the last hangers-on. I can't wait for them to expire.
