Inks on my desk (now cupboard)

I don’t know about you, but I seem to accumulate inks quite quickly. Every time I open FPN, or YouTube I see new, interesting, and pretty colours of ink. I never seem to think oh nice, but I’ve got enough to last me a lifetime. Nope, more often than I like it’s already in my shopping basket and I’m ready to check out.

Currently I have 60 ink bottles on my desk, the rest is stored away.

How many (and which) inks do you have at your desk ready to go into your favourite fountain pen?

Here are mine:

At the moment I only have my Sailor Jentle blue-black on my desk because I just filled a pen. There isn't enough space on my desk for inks so they're all in my IKEA bookcases.

Even though this was a snapshot from almost two years ago, it should still give you a fair representation of what's there today:

I don't think it's all that meaningful to list the >200 inks that are still there. Some of them did have to move out of the desk, and join some other inks that are/were ‘new’ since May 2020:

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Since both my two main desks and also my space for video conferences are in a rather warm and/or sunny space, all my inks are stored under a cabinet (no underfloor heating, hence the coolest place in the room).

What I do have on my desks are some Pineider Pen Fillers, Visconti Traveling Inkwells and TWSBI Diamond ink bottles. Right now these contain the following inks ready to be used (up): Akkerman Dutch Masters Ceruleum Blauw, Diamine Inkvent 2021 Ash & Candle Light & Pink Ice & Seize the Night & Wonderland, Pilot Iroshizuku Fuyu-Gaki.

I do not panic about my inks being "out in the open" and thus degrading over the course of some weeks, but for long-term storage my desks do not seem to be appropriate storage spaces.

Is that a thing? please elaborate!

OMG! And I thought my situation was already escalating. 😂

Some inks are very vulnerable regarding their lightfastness or resistance to UV light, also varying temperatures caused by a heater next to a desk or the sun shining on the desk for hours each day might affect the stability of inks.

This should not happen over the course of some weeks (which is how long I approximately need to empty those Traveling Inkwells), but for long-term storage those conditions are definitely not ideal.

And even if I forgot those amounts of inks that are partinioned off in these max. 10 ml vessels and have them go bad because of it, it would not be as much of a nuisance as 50 ml of my fav ink degrading.

I keep them in drawers under the table. This serves two purposes: it keeps them out of sunlight and also allows me pretend like my wife might not actually know how much ink I have.

How sneaky ... and clever! 😉

May I ask -- as this was the original intention of the thread starter, before my remarks caused the thread to deviate to storage conditions rather than actual inks -- which inks are so close to your heart that you like to have them stored close to your arms?

“The thread is taken where it goes and does not let itself be directed or steered.”

With every twist and turn there is a change to learn something new and interesting. So it’s fine wherever it goes.

My inks are on my desk but not in direct sunlight (blinded windows) and or close to a radiator. But after your remarks I might replace my inks to the cupboard behind me.

It was an indirect way of saying that I generally don't keep any ink on my desk. 😉

If I have ink on my desk it's usually something I have recently received and it's waiting to fill a pen or to be put in a drawer.  I do, however keep my inks from some of my more favored ink makers in the drawer closest to where I write. So in that drawer are my bottles/pouches from L'Artisan Pastellier, TAG Stationery, Robert Oster, Herbin, and R&K. I'd keep PenBBS in that drawer too, if it were big enough.

Not so sneaky - she probably actually knows how much ink I have - I just like to think she might not. It's more my own guilt about having so much ink and wondering what she thinks about it. 😄 She's actually really good about it, though if I receive a package, she will always say, "Another pen?" To which I just smile and say nothing.
