Where to find a Pelikan M1005 Stresemann?

Henri de Beriot

Recommended Posts

I have been looking for a Pelikan M1005 Stresemann Pen for some time now. I have looked on eBay; however, I am weary of the listings I have seen as none have photos of the actual pen itself, only stock images. I was hoping someone here could help me find one for a reasonable price (less than $700 US) or be willing to sell or trade one with me. I am sorry if this is not the place to post such a query; I only just signed up for an account on this platform so that I might be able to find this pen.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Hi Henri de Beriot, and welcome to FPN!

The M1005 Stresemann was a special edition, and as far as I know, only produced in 2019 (and even back then the production was delayed due to an unspecified supply chain problem). That means to find one today, it is probably necessary to search the secondary market, with all the risks that market entails. A few might exist somewhere at a dealer at retail, but they will likely be very difficult, if not completely serendipitous to find.

As the retail price of a new, regular production M1000 (whenever those start to ship again) is (I think) 715EUR (about US$815 at today's exchange rate), it is maybe not unreasonable to find a (used) M1005 Stresemann for about US$700, but I would not expect it to be easy.

eBay and similar platforms are one option. Here in these forums is another (there used to be a pretty strict ban on trading outside of the classifieds and other specified trading forums, but since the classifieds have been broken, folks have been a little lenient. On the other hand, too much talk of offers to buy/sell in the regular pen forums will tend to draw ire from forum participants and, eventually, the moderators (too much trading talk tends to attract riff riff into the discussion), so if you happen across someone who mentions they have or have seen an M1005 Stresemann, I would reach out via a private message to inquire about the possibility of a sale or trade.

So, in short, keep looking on the usual on-line trading places, have patience, and good luck. Maybe someone with a pen to sell will read this thread and reach out to you via private message, or someone else knows of someone who has a pen to sell, but I would not rely on this forum specifically for searches.

Hello @Henri de Beriot.

For example, in Japan, at least 2 Pelikan M1005 Stresemann pens are still available for ca.$520-550 at credible online sellers.

https://komehyo.jp/product/260-002-990-6147/ (used)

https://www.pen-house.net/item/42426.html

(But, they say they don't ship overseas)

So, please keep an eye on online sellers with wider scope of search patiently. You'll have a good chance🤞

Thank you @tacitus!

These are excellent examples of a few M1005 Stresemanns that are still in stock with some retailers. 66,000¥ seems to be about 20% off the Japanese MSRP of 82,500¥, which seems almost everywhere in the world often a typical "street price" or competitive retail price for a new Pelikan. The used pen was  little bit less. Do you know how popular modern Pelkans are in Japan? I was slightly surprised to see a special-edition that is out of production still being offered at a standard discount. I would have expected the price to be closer to full suggested retail.

I agree (and your examples prove), with a patient search, there are pens of this model to be found. These are the first ones I have seen offered new from a retailer in a while, but then, I have not been actively searching, either.

Thanks again for your research into this pen! If I remember correctly, there are also forwarding companies in Japan who can receive shipments from inside Japan on behalf of an international customer, then forward them to international destinations (for a fee, of course).

Thank you @N1003U😄.

Pelikan are also very popular in Japan!! Many Pelikan fans were looking forward to the launch of M1005 Stresemann (at first, M605/805 Stresemann were sold by the name of M605/805 black stripe in Japan. The company named so, probably because Gustav Stresemann was not so well-known as in Europe).

According to the sources, 250 pieces of M1005 Stresemann were on Japanese market. I don't know if the number was large or small for the the size of the market (by the way, as for Herzstück 1929, 90 of 428 pieces were sold in Japan), but, presumably that's why the pens are still in stock in Japan.

IMO, we Japanese have been enjoying opportunities to get SE/LE of Pelikan pens, not to mention Pelikan Maki-e series (I don't know how the situation is going in the future).

Thank you very much for your help @tacitus!

While unfortunate that they are unable to ship overseas, I have managed to track one down at a small European pen shop near me.

Thank you @N1003U, your response has been very informative! Luckily, I have managed to locate one somewhat close to where I live.
