Ink and plant pairings

The very first orchid I ever received, which I have managed to rebloom a few times, is having a banner year.  I am so happy that I wanted to pair it with a sample of Diamine Shimmering Frosted Orchid, as I think that is almost spot on one of the colors in the blooms, but there was too little remaining in my sample bottle.  I came up with this Vinta instead: IMG_1147.thumb.JPG.d0e8d0c51917c5099083acc6db7f465a.JPG

I received my very first orchid at Christmas. It is sitting on the coffee table where it landed and still flowering. I have no idea what I am meant to do to take of it.

Other than admire it, of course.  And think I should paint its portrait.  Neither of those will do much for its health.

Will work for pens...

Let me know when the blooms fall off and I will tell you; water it once a week but not if it hasn't seemed to dry out.  Most flower shop orchids orchids are of a type that will get root rot if they sit too wet.  Don't let water get into the central part (the crown) when you water.  One easy way is to water from below- sit it in water for twenty or so minutes once a week.  That's how I cared for the one in the picture.  I didn't start using any fertilizer until a year and half later (I didn't know I was supposed to!) and it still came into bloom again anyway.

Orchids are simple.  They like benign neglect.  And admirers, who paint them, for which I suspect you are vastly more capable than I am!

So do you have an ink to pair with your orchid?

Beaut. That I can do.

And do I get a bonus point for the ink match? I'm sure I see a greenish sheen on Yama-Budo to match the leaves of my orchid almost as well as the pink goes with the flowers.

That is a great match for a very pretty arrangement! 👏

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Brava! Now I'm going to have to see how Yama-budo pairs with my tolumnia which is coming into bloom for the first time; inspired by you, I may test some of a golden inks as well as the petals have yellow, too...

I will post in a day or two when more of the blooms have opened.

Here's another - I first tried Wine Devine (see swatch card) but didn't think that was quite right.  Not sure about the Yama-Budo here as I think the flowers have a bit of a hint of brown added to the pink.  Might try Edelstein Golden Beryl but I suspect that will err too much on the orangey side.IMG_1152.thumb.JPG.82e178b0525246d28fc83f6e317dc0eb.JPG

Here's a new orchid!  I almost used Diamine Frosted Orchid, but I thought it a bit too light.  Diamine Tropical Green for the leaves, Oster Purple Jazz for the flowers, though all my purples are bit too dark.large.IMG_1933.JPG.d0b19161dc43f37e65a45639f1c49cf3.JPG

Bloom time is starting!  I'm excited, this is the first time this plant has bloomed.  It is a vanda pinky.  I have decided the flowers are Penlux Mo Plum, the pot is Astoquiza Rot, and the leaves are more Oster Green at Night than the lighter greens or super-blackish greens.  I don't have a good ink for the blue pot, which is funny since I have sooooo many blue inks.

Hi @essayfaire!

Shame on me, I haven't seen your thread before. 😔

Congratulations to the blooming of the Vandachostylis Pinky!

Very nice ink fitting to the Dendrobium x sp. and a nice set of inks where each if fitting well to the others! 👍

My instant association to the "August 2022 Vanda" was Yama-Budo.

However, please accept me as a new groupie for this thread. 😄

One life!

Thank you!  I'm very excited!

Yama-budo actually works well for so many of my plants(I must have an affinity for purchasing things with purplish-pink blooms) that I try to vary it a bit!

Welcome!  I have a few other plants in spike/bud that I hope to be able to put up next month. 😀

Not an orchid- an African violet, "Ma's Second Chance."  Not sure what happened first! ;)

Additional blooms are white, but I don't have white ink nor fountain-pen-friendly navy/black paper, so this will have to do!  This hadn't bloomed for me for a while but I think I finally adjusted my light set-up correctly.

An impatient plant owner will wait a while and then, maybe give it away ...

.... to bloom at the second owner → "Ma's second chance". There we go! :D

Robert Oster Tempest Sky (a duo shader) may fit to the flower.

Dominant Industries Leaf Green will fit well to the leafs.

The hue of your ink is already a good approximation to the flower. Which one have you chosen?

I have an additional bloom now, which is both paler and more of a lilac- I don't think I have an ink in that color.  I do believe that the Pelikan 4001 Violet, which I don't have, might be a good match as it is more watery than the inks I tend to like, but that seems appropriate here.  And then it would also be a play on words!

This is the plant with which I started the thread.  Notice it has more buds this year! And I think I have id'd the no-id orchid(as Phaleonopsis Sogo Vivien)!  The ink is Emotions Gratitude, which just arrived.  Sometimes I can't id my ink...  Do y'all prefer the 2022 or 2023 pairing?

Phal. Purple Princess

Pilot Iro Yama-budo, R & K Verdigris, Visconti Blue, Edelstein Golden Beryl

I had lost the tag to this plant but when it came into bloom I was able to match it by going though my collection of tags belonging to plants I had killed.

Always a pleasure to see your plants flowering, @essayfaire! It seems to be a inspiration for ink choices.

And Yama-Budo is the clear winner for the "always match" competition! ;)

Do you make killmarks on the door frame? :)  My son does such things counting the number of banana plants he had removed and executed over the years. IIII :)
