Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Diamine Grey

This is review #162 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was quick and easy and showed a very dulled blue-green-ish color that I see in the swatch but not in the writing. This is a slightly green-leaning grey. Diamine Graphite included to show that it's less green than it is. Otherwise, I have no greys like this one.  None of the images is far off, but the undertone is a bit off, it should be a little warmer and greener - but still very "under" - it's not at all obvious, especially in the text (as opposed to the smear in the dry time).

Errata: "of his back" should be "off his back"

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Another one I already have!  Also have the MV in your comparison swatches.  But I haven't used this color in a while due to concocting a gray I dubbed Petrol Fox that's on the bluey-greeny side.

Thanks for the review…and the goats.  😉

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Petrol Fox

You should do a review, so the rest of us can enjoy it from afar! ;)

Thank you @LizEF - another excellent instalment - and a nice ink too!

This is one of those inks I always have around somewhere, though I confess I probably use Graphite more often - I like the greener-ness of it.

@Sailor Kenshin I'd love to see Petrol Fox too!

I have Diamine Grey in a pen at this very minute -- the TWSBI Vac 700 Iris (although it doesn't have an EF nib).

Thanks, as usual, for the review.

:) You're very welcome.  This seems to be a pretty popular ink.

More goats... are they grey?

A staple ink for me, along with Diamine Graphite and Earl Grey. Though I must admit they've been less used since the Van Dieman's Eclipse, Federation Peak and Cradle Mountain arrived here. Not that they're better, just equally good value (here) and prettier boxes that sit at the front if the shelf. I need to tidy my ink cupboard to give the Diamines a fair go.

Will work for pens...

They are how you imagine them - I prefer to offer very little description so as not to get in the way of your imagination. ;) Pictures I've seen of goats suggest they can be white, grey, and shades of brown, perhaps also black (or really dark grey or brown).

You're clearly the grey expert.  Do you organize them by how dark they are, or by brand, or by the undertones, or...?

Thank you @LizEF for the review and for the story episode!

I got the impression, the goats have secrets. I recommend to Quin and Makhabesh not to trust them! 😉 (I hope so much, they read this thread!)

All grey inks impress me. Not that I like to use them. It is more the design as a diluted black, justified to appear grey independent how wet and broad a nib may draw its lines. Maybe it is as simple as: dilute black 1+1 with water, fill the bottles and sell them. 😎

One life!

 Well, you can't expect them to have the same culture and traditions as people... ;)  Pretty sure having a goat on his back has done enough to convince Quin to escape the goats as soon as possible.

:) I think it it were just diluted black, they'd all have poor lubrication - since the lubricant would also be diluted.  From just the greys I've reviewed, there's quite a range of color classified as grey - or undertones mixed in with the grey...  I confess, I'm growing tired of them.  And I think I have enough grey samples now that I won't ever need to buy a bottle of any one of them.

Great job, @LizEF. I nearly missed this one but not the ink.

I had a good laugh reading the scene with the goats. I had the feeling I was watching a TNG episodes, in fantasy world.

Quin = Picard/ Riker Makhabesh = An impish Worf ;)

:lticaptd:Can't say I see this, but I am leaving most things up to everyone's imagination...   (Maybe you've been spending too much time on the holodeck with Mr. Broccoli, er Barclay.)

The concept of an "impish" Worf is sort of scary (I'm still binge re-watching ST:DS9 and they've just moved Worf to the station from the Enterprise -- and remembering a later episode when Worf and Dax become a couple and Dax is complaining to Worf about how he has no sense of humor.... B)

I still haven't tested the samples of VDI Eclipse and Cradle Mountain you sent me, Federation Peak has impressive water resistance, to my recollection, whereas Diamine Earl Grey has close to nil. Diamine Grey's water resistance is moderate, and slightly better than that of Diamine Graphite.
