Autopoint Mechanical Pencil Lead Size

Recommended Posts

I have an Autopoint vintage mechanical pencil.  It has a gold-filled cap (bell), a gold color ferrule.

When I pull the ferrule off, remove the shaft (?) the wire from a large paper clip fits in easily with room to spare.

With this limited info, how can I tell the lead size, or what resources are out there for me to use?

Thanks,

gary

do you have a set of calipers ?

The "big paperclip " I have hear is 1.25 mm.

I would try going to a store that sells mechanical pencils. I know there might not be any stores out there any more. But if you find the last store out there you could try out different led sizes.

Most likely vintage "standard" leads: 0.046 inch (1.1-1.2mm). Autopoint still offered these right up until they disappeared late last year, but you can get them from places like Pendemonium, Legendary Lead, and eBay.

According to the Legendary Lead Company a large paper clip fitting snugly would suggest the fairly obtainable 1.1mm size. If you've room to spare, it sounds like you might be looking for something larger, but I'm not absolutely clear what you're measuring. Suggest asking them as they probably know the answer.

My Autopoint canisters for red, green and blue lead are marked 0.9mm. Only one of three black lead canisters is marked and that is marked 1.1mm medium. The black lead side of the colored pencils is also 0.9mm and I use standard Pentel lead for those pencils.

Hello,

Thanks for the reference to the Legendary Lead Company.  Interesting resource for information and lead.  I've looking to reload a Norma four colour pencil and they appear to have stock of all the colours in 1.1 mm.  This is amongst stock of many different specifications of lead and colours.
