I'm not familiar with that ink at all.  Where do you get it?  (You're right, BTW -- it is a lovely color.)

Thank you Ruth :)

The Wearingeul inks are fairly new - from South Korea, and with interesting collections which seem to be based mainly on literature.

(though I'm sure that they're available from Vanness inter alia)

I only have a few so far, but like them a lot.

You've got some of the best inks @mizgeorge. I love the soft shade of indigo of this one, and the purple tones in the trees are very nice. Trees don't get enough respect. They are one of the most amazing creations and grow in such varied ways. Thanks for getting back to basics and inspiring us to do more of them. :)

Thanks!  Just checked the Vanness website, and they have some of the Wearringeul inks, but not that one, sadly.

Inspired by @namrehsnoom's lovely review

I thought I'd see if this one did anything interesting - I was hoping to see some of the yellow that showed up in the chroma, but no luck. The shimmer's pretty though :)

It sure is. Excellent reflections in the water too. Those are difficult to get right sometimes if the ink wants to run too far, but you pulled it off beautifully here. 👍

I'm not positive what kind of paper @namrehsnoom uses for his chromas. It could just be a piece of kitchen roll. I've seen someone use filter paper from a laboratory to do a chroma with amazing results. I might invest in some, it's not too expensive.

@mizgeorge that landscape using Nick’s techniques is lovely. The glimmer really gives it something extra. Nice to know that glitter sometimes has its uses 👍

@axialix For my chroma’s I don’t use anything fancy. Just white coffee filter N°4 paper. I put a drop of ink on it, and hold it in a glass to soak up water going up through the ink. Costs next to nothing, and works quite well to see the component dyes.

Wow!  Those are AMAZING, axialix!

I am constantly astounded by the amount of talent on this site: writers, artists, engineers, researchers....  And also by their generosity in sharing their work and knowledge.

Wonderful @axialix! You should start a separate thread for these - they are far beyond simple inkwashes and deserve to be seen!

Thank you @inkstainedruth and @mizgeorge. :)

The idea for the first one I stole from Bob Ross. I've been watching a lot of his videos lately. He was an incredible painter.

The idea for using gesso came from The Art Workshop. That guy is an amazing painter as well and has an excellent video on how to make your own reusable airbrush paper. It's great for people like me who usually mess up the first time and have to start all over.

I like trying new substrates to see how ink will look on them. I must admit the ink did not really like the gesso. Trying to do a basic wash resulted in reactivating the top layer of gesso and making a nice gooey mess. The ink also discolored the surface instead of simply adhering to it like an acrylic paint would. Spraying it on seemed to work best, although I did get a nice floral pattern in the bushes from a paintbrush dipped in ink and water. I have one more on gesso to finish, then I'm going to try plexiglass. 😃

The other bad thing about gesso: it shows every flow and imperfection in the surface. Either I'll have to use a higher grit sandpaper next time or just fork out the dough for some synthetic paper. Watercolor paper does not work well with erasing techniques (sand erasers, x-acto knives, etc.) to pull out highlights. No white was used for this one, just Parker Quink Black, an eraser, and a little bleach:

Nikko G nib and bleach:

I understand why Quink Black is one of Nick’s favorites. It can appear black, gray, blue, purple, even a little green sometimes. TerraSlate airbrush paper is super smooth but with ink applied does not like the eraser at all. It “scuffs” the surface more than it erases so bleach was used for all the gold highlights. Clouds are too much fun:
