Help identifying a vintage maybe-Waterman

I've got a pen here that looks like it could be a Waterman, but I'm trying to figure out firstly whether it is, and if it is, which model it is.

Attached are some photos of it lying next to a 52 (the 52 is on top in all photos). It had a chasing identical to my 52 once-upon-a-time, but has lost it over the years - it's barely visible now.. There are no imprints on the barrel nor the cap, but the remains of the Waterman logo can be seen on one edge of the end of the lever. The nib is an Ideal from New York, and the feed is almost certainly a Waterman.

However, there is no ring turned into the end of the cap as on the 52.

It's got a #6 nib, so it's a little larger than the 52, as can be seen in the photos.

Also, the pressure bar is hinged, which is something I've never seen before - but that might not have been part of the original pen.

Any ideas would be helpful and welcome!

Thanks

Cap is likely due to shortening possibly due to a lip crack etc?
Is there any number at the base of the barrel? I don't have a waterman 56 to check. I thought the barrel is larger in a 56 than that of a 52/54. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.

I have seen a number 7 nib jammed in to a waterman 94 olive ripple body. I don't know if that would work on a 52 / 54 body though

I'm no expert in this so I'm very likely wrong.

Good thinking! I hadn't considered that it's just a 54 or 56 with a modified cap. It wouldn't be surprising given that it appears to have been polished more than once over the years...

To answer your question - there is no imprint or engraving anywhere.

The one thing that I didn't mention is that there was a clip on the cap when I bought it - marked with "Johannes Faber - Bavaria". I wonder if Faber had some kind of agreement with Waterman through Eberhard Faber's in New York... It's a stretch, though... It is more likely that someone just put an available clip on the pen once-upon-a-time.
