Dip Pens

I was comparing Sailor Illinois ink with Sailor #743 using a relatively dry Kaigelu Long Blade nib, then a Wing Sung fine nib and a Pilot medium nib.

I’m debuting a blue Pilot Lucina F that I bought from an estate consignment lot at one of my local stores. I inked it with Pilot Iroshizuku Tsutsuji that I mixed berry mica into.

By coincidence, I was digging back in time this morning to find when I originally purchased a yellow Lucina, which was in 2007 documented in this review. It was prompted by the arrival of one of those 'JD Big Metal' pens from China, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the Custom Urushi and looks a bit like a Lucina which has eaten too many pies. I'll update this post to show them side by side.

The Lucina looks hilariously small in comparison.

Ink is Hero 234A black which is drying grey. Odd, since I thought this was supposed to be one of the blacker blacks.

Lol, it does look like a Lucina that ate too many pies! That’s funny. I saw those on Aliexpress and wondered about them. They do look very similar.

Top 5 of 26 (in no particular order) currently inked pens:

Pelikan M300 CIF, Pelikan Edelstein Golden Beryl

MontBlanc 144R F, Diamine Bah Humbug

Pelikan M605 F, Pelikan Edelstein Moonstone

Waterman Caréne Black Sea, Teranishi Lady Emerald

Pilot 742 FA, Namiki Purple cartridge

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

I have a few pens inked and today I used:

MB 144 black

PFM V black

Swan Visofil V211 (candy striped?)

I didn't have a chance to use the Boheme and the DLR New Swift, maybe tomorrow

Today it's been the recently checked out (as of last weekend at OPS) and filled Do-Write lever filler, F(?) nib, with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.  A bit drippy at times and a little bit of leakage from the collar/section  around the nib and feed, but a nice writer otherwise.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

No pens in use today.  I'm having a quiet day at home and currently enjoying a cup of tea while watching a Premier League match (Crystal Palace  v. Fulham) that I recorded to watch today.

Again today is a Lamy Safari Aqua Sky with a stubbed M and Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo. No sign of thickening ink with its windowless rollerball barrel.

And... a Light Rose was picked up yesterday.  It will get the same treatment - nib stubbed and barrel swap. And then a grey ink... It seems crazy to buy the matching rollerball to swap the barrel and toss the remaining pieces in the parts box. Whatever. I do like the 'clean lines' of the uninterrupted barrel and am quietly confident the drying out is slowed down enough to make a pen that is usable in the hot dry of here.

Will work for pens...

I need to choose between two pens. One is the TWSBI Diamond Mini AL Silver with 1.1mm stub nib. I need to choose a gray ink for it. Or I could use the Kaweco Brass Sport with a cartridge of Diamine Oxblood. The nib is drying right now.

Sometimes I envy owners and users of multiple fountain pens they like very much.  I very much prefer to stick with just one fountain I use every day and have two or three inks in different colors.  The pen is a Montblanc 149 Flex Nib Special Edition and the inks are Montblanc Permanent Blue,  Diamine Golden Brown, and Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Goldgrun.

@singlechange there is nothing wrong with using a single pen. I sometimes envy those who are satisfied with one pen, and a few inks. Less to store, etc.

I opted for the Kaweco Brass Sport, F nib, with the Diamine Oxblood ink cartridge. It’s a heavy pen, but it works for a page a day. I need to figure out which gray ink to put in the TWSBI.

There can be something extra special about having just one pen, and it looks to me that you have one of the best candidates for such a pen! Congratulations 🙂

I'm still loving, and daily using my 149 Flex*, alongside one or two other pens, depending on my mood. Today it has been joined by my Nakaya Piccolo Writer.

I'm planning on slimming down my ink collection to just a small selection but, for now, I can't see myself managing to slim down the pens I've collected.

* appologies for not posting pics of my 149 Flex as requested, I've yet to master the art of taking hot pen pics, and also the art of flex writing for that matter! I'm still really enjoying the added flavour the nib adds to my normal handwriting.

I absolutely love this sentiment.  Having a curated collection of ones favorites and just using those sounds absolutely delightful!
