I like the way this fountain pen writes. Flawless. I've got the all-black one.

Yes, you are right. I pick it up and it writes, no issues what so ever. I like the weight as well.

I have been writing in my planner all day, so it’s been an EF Jinhao 51a inked with Diamine Registrar’s Ink. It’s a good pen, reliable writer that I don’t balk at taking out of the house while running errands.

Later tonight I’ll be using an ES Perry italic 95 Broad Straight dip pen with some mica powder/ fp ink combinations I have been experimenting with.

Hey PGC... I don't have Registrar's ink.  I keep wanting to get it.  How dark does it get?  Can you compare it to Pelikan Blau-Schwarz ?  Tell me about your 51a.  Is it plastic or wood.  Open or hooded nib? 😃  Is the EF scratchy?  I just pulled out my blue WingSung 601 with Kon-Peki, to commiserate.  Wow, talk about pens that always write when you take off the cap... 👍

Looking forward to seeing your Mica/ink combos.  How does Mica powder compare to Wearingeul Glitter? 😃

The past two days I used my final two Conklins, the Red Nights filled with J Herbin Rouge Opera, and the Orange Nights filled with Iroshizuku Yu Yake both with 1.1mm stub nibs. Well, on Tuesday the Ice Blue Duragraph is scheduled to arrive. Here is the Duragraph portrait in order of use for a week.

Today I am using a burgundy English Parker "51" with a rolled silver cap and a broad nib.  I usually prefer fat fine nibs, but this broad nib is amazing.   It has huge nib tipping material and the flow and smoothness are perfect.  I think I'll keep this one..

I only have a sample, so I am unsure if it’s changed while decanted. I think it gets darker than Pelikan B-S. When I get back to my desk, I’ll add a photo of the two inks side by side.

As to my 51a, it’s hooded, EF, and not at all scratchy. I inked it in an attempt to have an fp in my pocket that would work well on carbon copies, but it doesn’t fit the bill. I think I might try to find an Esterbrook nib for that.

I think the Esterbrook 9460 or 9461 are considered appropriate for doing that.

HERE

is the link to an Esterbrook nib chart that I have used in the past.

@USG -- I tried a sample of Diamine Registrars a number of years ago and didn't like it much.  It may have been a bad batch but it didn't really darken and was sort of a washed out blue-grey in color (although it did shade nicely).

I found that Akkerman IJzer-Galnoten (and the Ackerman inks are rumored to be made for them by Diamine) got a LOT darker a lot faster.  But I couldn't get through a 60 ml bottle fast enough and it went bad on me... (the iron particles started to precipitate out). :crybaby:

Still inspired by your 51a, I tried a 1946 P51 EF. Not scratchy but a lot of feedback on the Bank Paper.

Hi ISR,  that's interesting.... what did the iron particles look like when they precipitated out?  What did the ink look like?

Meanwhile I found this in the back of a drawer.  It was about 1/3-1/4 full.  I hydrated it a little because it was sitting there for a good 20 years but haven used it yet.  How does this fit in with the other blue black inks?

It’s much more subtle so far. I’m very into monotone right now though, using green inks and green mica together, etc. I did try some black ink with red mica, and that was a little more noticeable, but I don’t know if I am adding enough. I’m being super cautious. I’m going to post about it soon, once I get a better handle on it.

What a gorgeous example of a blue diamond 51!  I prefer to use medium and larger nibs on bank paper because of the feedback. I bet the 51 writes nicely on Iroful.

Carried my blue marble Vanishing Point fine inked with ku-jaku into Houston today to sign for a camera I’d long coveted and finally decided to buy myself for my birthday. And then used it to sign for the lunch tab after my wife surprised me with a couple of new lenses and a more compact flash I’d been thinking about. Pretty good use of a FP!

What a beautiful 51! As for Platinum BB, it's an iron-gall ink (well technically ferro-tannate ??) Since it doesn't contain gallic acid it will not darken as much as more classic IG blue blacks. Diamine Registrar is the strongest out of Pelikan BB and Platinum BB, it will also have the shortest shelf life and will darken to almost black when fresh and on the right paper.

Platinum BB on the other hand will have the longest shelf life, usually doesn't precipitate (but then if your bottle is super old, maybe try it in a cheap pen first), and will feel the least "IG" (dry and unlubricated/watery?) of the 3. A nice and underrated ink for sure. As for precipitation well it varies but what I saw was dark chunks at the bottom of the bottle, along with the ink loosing it's strength, becoming paler and less susceptible to darken with time.

Back to Platinum BB, on the right paper it will sheen red (at least the current version, bottle looks different).

Trying to remember now.  I think the iron particles looked like small metal shavings (maybe about 3/16" long or so); the ink itself was sort of a washy dark grey -- not even black the way it oxidized to on the page as it dried.  I think I may have pitched the entire bottle because I figure that the bottle would be too hard to clean (I know, I know -- the Akkerman bottles are SOOOO cool).

Of course now I'm wondering about the condition of the OTHER IG inks I have: R&K Salix and Scabiosa; the bottles and one sample I have of FPN member Pharmacist's IG inks in colors besides blue-black (Terra Incinerate, Darkening Absinthe, and -- my favorite -- Turkish Night, and the sample of his blue-black ink Urkundentinte);  the sample I have of Organics Studio Aristotle; and all the KWZ IG inks I've gotten (IG Red, IG Violet #3, IG Gummiberry, IG Mandarin, IG Green #3, IG Turquoise, IG Blue-Black, and IG Blue #3, plus samples of IG Light Light Antique Gold and IG Violet #2)....  And of course Pelikan 4001 Blue Black, which I've been using a lot recently (although I'm less worried about that one, since I think the iron content in it is lower than for some other IG inks.

Waterman Allure in pastel yellow. It is an inexpensive fountain pen that performs very well with a Waterman blue ink cartridge.
