I have both vintage 4001 blue-black and new.  Is there any way to detect Iron Gall ink?

Both are IG.

You can run some ink between your fingers and smell if that smells "like iron" (iron itself doesn't smell, what we're smelling there is fat from your skin catalized by iron...or something like that. I'm sure you can find a much better explanation online. Anyway you should b able to recognize the smell by comparing to another IG ink, or just by rubbing an iron nail or someone like that with your fingers).

Edit: this is a very heated topic. If you want a more scientific approach, I think there are some testing sheets available.

I wanted to follow up on this.  Which flowed better? The new ink or the old?

  The old, for sure.

Today I have used the new 4001 BB myself- I really like it, perhaps because I loved the Cross BB in the past, which I guess was Pelikan in disguise.

Today it's been the Dove Grey 51 Vac, F(?) nib -- Robert Oster Sydney Lavender; and the Pelikan M205 Blue Marbled, M nib -- with Pelikan 4001 Blue Black.

Today I inked up my Pelikan M600 Violet-White B (Robert Oster Cosmic Swirl) and M400 White Tortoiseshell M (Robert Oster Grün Schwarz) and had a lovely time writing with them.

I also used my Kakimori brass-nib dip pen a bunch as I was playing around trying to determine if any of the possible Iroshizuku Hoteison alternatives I’ve amassed are a close enough match to illicit the same intense joy I feel using Hoteison.

Well, I tried to use my new Morison today, the barrel is too short for a Platimun cartridge, so I inked my PK-1000 for the first time, with a Platinum Blue-Black, but I was impatient to try i, so I also dipped the nib in Pilot BB to get it going. It’ has a lovely bouncy 14k inlaid nib.

Today is the PDX Pen in person bimonthly meeting, so I plan on trying out some other folks’ pens and bringing my Parker Vector calligraphy pen with Parker Penman Sapphire for those who love that color or have never seen it to try.

Those are actually pretty good pens.  If I remember correctly, the nibs are kind of stiff, but they do write well, without skipping or any such problems.

This morning I’m using the Pilot Custom 912 MS (Music) nib with Sailor Nekoyanagi — wow this ink is way too dry for this pen, which is a shame because it looks beautiful on the page if you can get past the writing experience.

I had a ton of fun at my pen club meeting today. I tried someone else’s M800 M,  a modern one- it’s such a different nib.  I also tried a GvFC for the first time,  what a nice nib, and the pen was platinum plated, so pretty! That was it, really. It was more of a looking day, so many lovely pens to see, paper to try with my own pen, and friends to connect with.

@Penguincollector I miss going to Pen Club. The members added a Sunday afternoon meetup, to go with the regular last Wednesday virtual meeting. But caregiver me cannot go to the in person because it’s almost an hour drive each way. I’m comfortable leaving my Mom alone up to two hours, but anymore would make me nervous about it.
