What pen(s) are you using today?

A Smug Dill

Recommended Posts

This Montegrappa Elmo Very Peri just before it gets taken out of rotation today for cleaning and storage till its next entry into rotation.

Love this pen and kicking myself for not having picked it up a lot sooner than I did. Anyway...

It's beautiful: classic shape, nice size and heft to it, and the violet looks absolutely unique in real life.

The nib is amazing and lays down a wet line with great smoothness. I have written with it in all kinds of notebook paper and it writes like a dream (not considering feathering etc. Just the feel of pen on paper).

Currently inked with the Taccia violet. Looking forward to trying the iroshizuku violet in it the next time.IMG_20230219_075410-01.thumb.jpeg.2a10ff7e5eaa18aa667187c306fef834.jpegIMG_20230219_075500-01.thumb.jpeg.cef1ef2796de6ffdcf529e23a08a39af.jpeg

It's a very dramatic color. 🙂  I like it a lot, but I'm only going to dip it for the time being.

I was not at all into demonstrators, but the blue ones have totally changed my mind! That’s a cutie! You’re totally in!

My Edison Collier and  Kaigelau K316. Apologies the K316 appears grey in the photo but it really is a very dark blue. The finial was made for me by a member on here, and it completely transformed the pen.

I'm actually using my 1950's Parker 51 in Burgundy today with Aurora Black🙂,  for the first time in many years. My first fountainpen purchase.  (My parents purchased my previous ones (Parker 25's) as I was still in school.😊

You’re in!  The top one with the gold furnishings reminds me of my Duofold, which also looks grey in certain lighting conditions.

That's because it was Kaigelau's attempt at a copy of the Duofold! I first saw a Duofold Centinal in a bricks and mortar store in the late '80's I think, in blue. It had pride of place in the display cabinet. I thought it was the most beautiful pen I'd ever seen. I dropped 'hints' for Christmas.... I got a Parker 75 Laque in red set (with a ballpoint)

The lady sales assistant advised it would be a good choice if I hadn't written with fountain pens for a while...  (We had to write with a fountain pen at our school from 11-16/17 years old... (My trusty Parker 25's)

Ah yes, RichardandTracy.  What a great contributor! He cast plastic tail pieces to replace the original heavy, metal ones. I’m happy that Kaigelu fixed this for the current generation of 316 pens.

Entering the rotation today is a Gama half-demonstrator,  with an acrylic barrel and ebonite section and cap. The section is threaded to take a Jowo nib unit and I have a Kanwrite two-tone medium with Jowo threads on this pen.

It's a beautiful pen offering a lush writing experience. I ked with the Waterman violet.

It's a clipless design so the pen is in my office carry pen case and not in my shirt. I usually don't carry clipless pens to work but this one comes with me because I have to exhaust its massive ink capacity before I take it out of rotation. IMG_20230219_150210-01.thumb.jpeg.7fa3c3c353812194d03ef9b6b159f98f.jpegIMG_20230219_150313-01.thumb.jpeg.81c5c98e2c63d880160ef5641260840a.jpeg

That’s right, now I remember something about this in a post over in the Asian pens forum. I also thought it was the most beautiful pen ever when I saw it in a full page ad in Architectural Digest. It was my debutante (quinces) gift, that pen and a Fendi Janus faced wristwatch. I was an odd teenager.

Does anyone know which Chinese company it was that made the copy of the Dolce Vita Naranja? I've looked but I can't seem to find them anywhere?  When I took it out of storage I discovered the nib is totalled 😲 (Sorry the photo has rotated between devices/during upload)

Entering the list of pens on my home desk is this Majohn (Moonman) Q1 demonstrator.

It's a novelty and a fancy pen, definitely not practical for me in terms of carry or even prolonged writing.

While I have a fair number of large (read jumbo sized) pens, this one is still girthier than the ones I have from Gama and Ranga and the likes.

But I have to say that it was easier to write with it for short bursts, say about 6-7 lines than I imagined it would be. I can't write with it unposted, and it is usable for me only when posted.

Inked with the Sheaffer brown, the extra fine nib writes smoothly and well, coming second only to my Pelikan M205 extra fine.IMG_20230219_150425-01.thumb.jpeg.7761980985cfef7b96b837d960e3a23a.jpegIMG_20230219_150510-01.thumb.jpeg.7f1cb47e1b8cbdb5c9ed3708b79cb1d4.jpeg

What is this Midiri magic? Are you getting the brush-effect off the back of the nib? Definitely zen. Impressed!

Yeah, the MIdori MD pen has a slightly downcurved nib (like a PO nib, but Midori just calls it "beak like"), which allows for back-of-nib brush effect strokes.

For this one I put a small drip of water on the nib slit to dilute some of the ink in feed, then brushed a few times on scrap paper until the darker ink started to come out again, then put the nib to paper to get a blend of light & dark. Full disclosure: There were also more than a half a dozen prior attempts, using up all my papers that I had pre-prepped with various light washes the night before --- they all came out stif and lifeless. I finally got out of my head and let the nib dance on a blank page in a Rhodia Touch Pen and Inkwash sketchbook.

What have you done with the cat? It looks half dead.
