Today (so far) it's been:

1) Cross Solo (red, F nib) -- finishing up a fill of Birmingham Pens Herr's Island Ultramarine. Trying to decide if I'm going to refill or flush; I really like the ink, but I have a bunch of samples and bottles I really need to try at some point....

2) Pilot Metropolitan Retro Pop (grey/herringbone, stub nib) -- Namiki Black.

This morning I’m using a pearl Pelikan Jazz Elegance that has a mix of Serenity Blue and Ambre de Birmanie in the feed- I was having trouble with the 2.5mm five below nib last night and swapped out the colors so I could troubleshoot it. The resulting mix in the feed is a very pretty green reminiscent of the Everglades.

Do you like the Birmingham inks?  I find them inconsistent.  Washable, don't stain but very blasé, nothing really stands out.

Not using it yet, but soon I hope -- I got in on my 1st Ranga Group Buy; ordered one of their new Samurai model in Premium Ebonite, in one of their new finishes, the #P24 which I thought is very reminiscent of our old Viet Nam 'Tigerstripe' camo. (Couldn't pass that one up!)  For an upcharge, these can be fitted for a Bock #8 nib section, but I stayed with the #6 for interchangability with the other 3 I've already got.

Anyway, was wondering if any of you guys here had also participated in the buy.

I got 99 problems but a BIC ain't one!

My new custom Jinhao Centennial with FPR 14 kt. gold flex nib and homebrew ink...20230107_190601.thumb.jpg.dfaf0168565ca147d825e50692dac8ff.jpg

How is the nib swap working out for you? I asked for a Jinhao 100 because I read on here that it was possible to use a Duofold Centennial nib section on it, but mine (1991) is incompatible.

My newly acquired Ranga 3 in ebonite. Most comfortable writer I've ever owned. I am trying out Emerald of Chivor, a very interesting ink.

Well I have quite a few Parker Duofolds 1925 through 1997.  None of those sections, especially the 1925 🤣, fit the modern Jinhao.  The nib was custom fit with a custom feed in the Jinhao nib unit and then screwed in place and tuned.

I took advantage of the last group buy for a Range Samuri. Mine is a plain blue ebonite. I did opt for one that takes a #8 Bock nib. I had a 14Kt B Bock nib ground to a cursive italic by Pablo Carrasco waiting for it.

The Samurai is a very oversized pen, as I'm sure you appreciate. Because of the ebonite, it is rather light however, and I find its ergonomics to be outstanding. It is a very comfortable pen to use. Here's a photo of it with a Pelikan M800 and a MontBlanc 146 for comparison:

Let us know how you like your Samuri with a #6 nib.

Happy writing!

Did you send it out for replacement, or work on it yourself? I’m interested in trying the same now that I saw yours.

I did everything myself, not difficult just inky fingers and a bit of time, used the dremel to mod the feed.

Nice, I’m slowly transitioning from just an end user to a fiddler and this may help push me more firmly in that direction. Does the feed that comes with the flex nib not keep up with it before modding?

So the Jinhao Centennial comes with a plastic feed.  The FPR gold flex nib usually takes a 6.3mm ebonite flex feed with a very wide ink channel.  The plastic feed needs to be modded with a wider ink channel to supply adequate ink to the flex nib.

Oh, so you used the Jinhao feed and modified it and just swapped the nib- I see. It all makes sense now! I thought you had to modify the ebonite feed (and that is definitely above my pay grade).

Correct, now the Jinhao Centennial has a 14 kt. gold flex nib and writes beautifully.  Am also using home made ink designed to complement the characteristics of this nib and feed.  Nice flex and great shading.
