I got this pen today

Recommended Posts

Lamy 27e, which would be from sometime around 1956 to 1962. It is a piston-filler with a semi-hooded nib, looking somewhat similar to the old Aurora 88s. The nib says FK which I believe means Fine Kugel, where kugel refers to a quite round tipping. I was able to confirm the roundness of the tipping through a loupe.

It came with known difficulties, which is why I got it cheap. There is a crack in the cap that should respond to solvent welding (it does not go past the cap band, so the main concern is restoring the airtight-ness of the cap around the nib; final step will be some Capt. Tolley's). They also said that the piston works "but it leaks." It is a modern plastic gasket and I don't know how to remove the piston mechanism from this pen, so I put in some silicone grease  through the front and spread it around thinly, and I'm hoping that will do the job for a while at least. I am currently testing it with water, and if it passes that test I will test it with ink. I only bought it because I wanted to see if I liked it, and to compare it to the Pelikan P1 that I bought but which hasn't arrived yet.

How are the 82 compared to the 992? Have you tried them?

Do you reckon the translucent material on these will be less prone to cracking than the 992?

I have 3 jinhao 82 on the way myself, but I'll have to wait at least a month till they arrive.

I have not tried a 992.  I hope they won’t crack.

I now have 12 of the Jinhao 992, the oldest dates back to August 2017 and only one of them has cracked. And it was dropped and then trodden on. I hear other people have had trouble with them, and I believe that but it's not my experience. I have both opaque and transparent versions. If it makes a difference the one that was wrecked was a transparent blue.

I also want to say they seal very well. They are one of the very few pens that are completely trusted in my my hot dry climate and can be left inked for years without drying out or hard starting. With pigmented inks. And they're cheap so they are my preferred pen for sketch kits - especially if they have a fude nib! And that's how they get forgotten - left in some bag or pencil case after being taken outside to play. They turn up again and, so far, none the worse for the neglect. If I need to pad an order to qualify for free or fast shipping I usually get another one in a different colour, that's how I have ended up with so many.

Will work for pens...

I just got a teal Lamy AL-star with a fine nib, and a Strathmore writing tablet. My husband was going to his hobby store and it’s across the street from the stationery shop and he was kind enough to ask me if I wanted to go. Not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth, I accepted the invitation.

@Misfit, I was expecting a pastel pink with that name and honestly thought it was red at first.

The ink splatters on that paper towel could be taken for an injury. Beware: sharp nib!  Or a crime scene... no It wasn't the Professor, it was The Pen.

Will work for pens...

Here is a photo with Pinkly on a red notebook to try to show the pink. Of course, with the pen being transparent, it might not help as much as I hoped.

The Opus 88 Picnic pens arrived today. I’m saving the green version as a birthday gift from my Mom. The purple version is going to be used. Maybe I’ll fill it with J Herbin Pousierre de Lune.

So we have to wait 'til your birthday to see a Family Photo of the set? OK, I can wait... Are we there yet? Are we there yet? 🤎💙💜...💚  :)

Unfortunately my birthday is in the Northern Hemisphere Autumn, soon after the Equinox.  I like the hearts standing for the colors. Picnic pens are fun. I like them a lot. Though I don’t enjoy eating outside.

My impulse buy arrived today and I've only dip-tested it, but I think I love it already!

It's a Gioia Alleria with a steel M nib ground to a perfect cursive italic by Fontoplumo's resident nib whisperer. Then pen is more burgundy than pink, but the light from the window caught the lighter spots in the marbling perfectly to reveal some very pretty pink.

Due to what I think of as synchronicity of package deliveries from different sources, ordered at different times and using different delivery methods, four pens are arriving today. (This kind of synchronicity has happened before, but it's been quite a while since I had so many pens in transit to me.)

A coral-colored ST Dupont Fidelio, via FedEx, from elsewhere in my own state.

A gold-plated ST Dupont Fidelio, via USPS, from another state.

Two pens in one package (1930's Danish Miller, and 1940's Stephens), via Royal Mail and USPS, from the UK.
