I got this pen today

Had a few arrive today:

  • Conklin Mark Twain Crescent Filler, black chased, with 1.1mm stub nib.

  • Senator Regent piston-filler, medium nib.

  • Parker 17 Super Duofold in green with the open nib, again a medium.

I think this'll be an interesting weekend.

I'd be interested in hearing your opinion of the Senator.  I recently got a Senator (I think a Windsor) and I really surprised that the M nib writes more like an F (I have Pelikan Violet in it at the moment, so it may just be that's the reason -- or it could be that then pen is dry writer, or both...).  But I just couldn't pass up the deal of a piston filler for a buck....

An interesting second-hand Online calligraphy set.

First impressions:

  • Pluses
    • Quite pretty wood cap & barrel.
    • An attractive sort-of triangular shape and a slight curve along the axis, a little reminiscent of the Waterman Serenite.
    • The nibs have a slight bit of flex.
    • Cool looking, functional, (but cheap feeling/looking) wood case with magnet closures.
    • I didn't pay much for it. :)
  • Minuses
    • The short section makes the ergonomics odd - I end up gripping it on the metal ring on the barrel.
    • Only one converter. Would be nice to have a converter for each nib.
    • The clip has this weird, thin metal bend that connects it to the barrel and is the 'spring'. Seems bound to break and it's not attractive. I can't imagine clipping this rather long pen in a pocket. The triangular-ish shape is enough to ensure the pen won't roll and the pen would have looked much better without a clip.
    • Seems a bit cheap feeling all-in-all.

First impressions: it's not a luxury pen (obviously) but it's not bad. Mostly plastic. The piston works smoothly and fills the pen almost to the gunwales with a single go. The ink view window is big and it's easy to see how much one has left. Barrel diameter is about 11.5mm, but the short section is waisted and about 9.5mm at the narrowest - size-wise the body is not far off a Pelikan M200. The nib (steel, I think) is smooth with a bit of feedback, wet, and with a little bounce. All in all I think it'll make an excellent daily driver.

Here's a size comparison with a Pelikan M200:

Thanks.  I have a few M200/M205 pens, so I have a good idea of the size and weight.

So far, I've been pretty happy with the Senator (I had heard of the brand but knew nothing about it -- but for a buck it was worth taking a risk, especially since the piston seemed to move freely).  It was just that the nib seemed really dry (next time I'll try a wetter ink in it to see if it was just a case of 4001 Violet being too dry.

There are gifts I received for my birthday. From left are a Conklin Endura Deco Crest, the Lamy Safari Strawberry and Cream, and an Opus 88 Picnic pen that I put an Edison unbranded 1.1mm italic nib on. I’ve filled the Conklin with another gift, Diamine Autumn Oak, and the Opus 88 with a sample of Kobe Wind Blue.

  • 2 weeks later...

It was actually last week that this lot, which was lost in the system for a number of weeks, turned up:

large.799286269_OnePenBBS308penandsixadditionalnibs.jpg.2b17d1e4befe460ee370838127d61b1e.jpg

Not that I actually needed another PenBBS pen into which to fit the nibs; nor do I need another REF nib but, hey, one could never have too many finer-than-Fine nibs. I don't particularly favour demonstrators, but this model 308 pen was the cheapest variant on offer with an RM nib (just to be different from the other nibs), so whatevaa. As for the nib pendant colours, I didn't have much choice, as each nib type was only being offered matched exactly as shown.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Looks great, @A Smug Dill, thanks for sharing! Hope the calligraphy nibs turn out to be great. Quirky, at least.

I have a similar box on my desk, where only the pen is different (491, also demonstrators), waiting for a good moment to try out... Busy times on this side of the world.

I got a Sheaffer's Balance pen, either a Statesman or a Sovereign, can't make up my mind. Writes nicely, just don't know what it is. Help would be much appreciated.

Enjoy the day!

Thank you. These are actually my first vintage pens I ever got (except for a p51 that had the tipping of the nib broken from one tine, so I never got to use it).

They seem to be in excellent condition, and I am very picky with my pens.

Just a little question: Does the cap on the P1 have some kind of click when you put it on. On this one is not like your average Pelikan, it feels like there is slight resistance when capping it, like you have on some pens with the "bayonet" mechanism.

It shouldn't click, as far as I know - it's a screw cap that goes on and off with a half turn. Having said that, when capping my P1 I tend to turn the cap the wrong way until it clicks before screwing it on, to get the threads engaged safely.

A Sheaffer Stylist. Is it the most un-Sheaffer-like Sheaffer?

Like the Platinum PKW-5000 and Parker 180 - nibs of all three shown below for comparison - it has a flat, triangular nib that is designed to write on both sides. While the Platinum and Parker are designed to write different line widths using the same nib, this Stylist puts down a nice EF-width line but on both sides (note that the feed is marked 'F', only). Yeah, I don't get it either ...

Sort of humdrum aesthetically, at least to my eye, but a nice, solid pen and very good writer (on both sides of the nib, even).
