I got this pen today

My Conway Stewart Churchill in blue stardust came in today! Now I need to decide what to ink it with. I like my rotation to be in different colors to help each day to stand out in my journal but looking at it now I have six shades of turquoise/blue, MB Irish green, Diamine ancient copper, and Diamine writer's blood. It's hard to add in another blue to go with the new pen. Not that I don't have more shades of blue in the ink drawer but not enough other colors in the rotation to set it off ;)

Maybe time to change the rotation...

The Gravitas Pocket pen is about empty... Maybe drop it and clean out the Aurora Talentum. Then add my Nakaya Dorsal Fin v1 with SBRE Brown to help balance things out. I could reload the MB 149 with Pelikan Olivine...

Beautiful pen!! Choices, choices! But I often think brown ink looks good in a blue pen. Or green. Or orange. 😁

Something magenta, then?

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

In black and demonstrator pens I feel open to any color ink, but my mind doesn't like seeing a large mismatch in ink to body color on colored pens. I do have 43 bottles of ink to pick from and not one is black or gray ink ;)

Hmm... my Pen House Saki Ebizome is somewhat magenta. Maybe I should load it into something.

I feel your pain. I once pulled the trigger on a ‘49 aero “buy it now” at “a little high for a burgundy and a total steal for a plum” while unsure of the actual colour. It’s burgundy. Nice pen. But not my plum. 😕

i sure as heck didn’t get it for $45… so i think you still did ok.

Well, I've just spent the past several days trying to flush it out, and finding that there is definitely ink leaking from the crack at the base of the hood.  So now I'm going to have to start looking for a replacement hood, I suspect.  I'll price the ones that are on eBay at the moment, and then see what I can find at the next couple of pen shows I'm going to (Commonwealth is pretty small, but I might get lucky -- and if not, the Ohio show is a lot bigger).

Wish I knew what the turquoise ink I've been flushing out of it is -- it's a nice color (although oozing from the crack as I've been soaking it, nib down).  Ironically, the Parker 21 which I bought Saturday morning at an estate sale down river from me is in better shape and I'm not seeing ANY cracks in it, and have been using the -- I think -- blue-black ink in it which got reconstituted when I went to flush it out over the weekend.  Go figure....

ETA: The seller didn't apparently like my "meh but positive" feedback (I didn't feel like waiting a week to post the "neutral" or "negative" feedback) and offered me a full refund if I wanted to send it back (which of course is NOT what the original listing said -- it said "No returns!").  And also whinged at me about how there WERE "brown" 51s.  And I said "Yeah, there are brown 51 VACUMATICS -- which this isn't -- and COCOA (light brown) 51 Aerometrics -- which this ALSO isn't.  And I had ASKED you about the condition and color and got blown off.  I suspected it was Burgundy and I was right.  And maybe if you're going to sell stuff like this YOU should do a little due diligence about what you've got for sale...." and sent him the link to Tony Fischier's site as my go-to source for all things Parker....

I'm ALSO now happy I didn't bid on the Parker 41 the seller had (it looked a lot like the color of the one I have) and I KNOW that 41s are made with the same grade of plastic as 21s (mine's in good shape, but I also baby it and don't use it a lot...).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I think I saw Five Star Pens selling new old stock burgundy hoods on eBay if you're still looking.

Thanks.  I think they usually have a table at the Ohio Pen Show, too.  And that's my "close" show.  I will also be checking at the Commonwealth Pen Show next weekend, but it's a much smaller show so I'm not sure what I'll be able to find as far as parts go.  Plus, Ron Zorn is in my local pen club, and there's a meeting tonight, and he might have one in his shop (in which I'll just send the pen home with him and get it back next month).

It said aerometric I believe, so the old ones. But if you're looking to buy definitely double check. No clue where they got so many NOS specifically of the burgundy ones.

Well, Burgundy is one of the more common colors....  (Remember --while Plum, which was only made for the 1948-49 model year -- is the rarest color, Parker probably STILL made thousands of them, and mitto doesn't have them all, yet (although I know he keeps trying.... )

Five Star Pens may have sourced them from some other repair place.

Sorry to hear about the crack :(

Still, the nib alone, were you to buy it for parts, would have cost you the $45 so it’s not a total loss.

re the colour: you could do what i do; i do the coffee filter chromatography test on it and then compare those results to other known results. Or you could do the test and post the results here with a writing sample and see if anyone can identify it.

ps. Very jealous that you have Ron in your local pen club! You are very lucky to have such a knowledgeable And skilled mechanic local to you!

Just give me the Parker 51s and nobody needs to get hurt.

Well the chromatography idea for the ink was a good one.  But after flushing the pen for 2 days in ammonia solution and then distilled water (repeatedly), I don't think I'll get much in the way of results.  The ink is probably just too diluted for that.

The ink did remind me a bit of vintage Skrip Peacock, though.  Anyone know if Parker made a turquoise color ink?

As for having a local repair guy?  Oh yes, we are DEFINITELY lucky!  Although admittedly I often just take stuff to shows and have him work on them there.

Yes. They apparently did:

Dang!  That looks a LOT like what I've been flushing out of the pen!  Thanks!

Of course, now that means I'm going to be haunting antiques shops and scouring eBay listings for a bottle of this.... :wallbash:

Just received an aerometric-filler Osmiroid 65 with the India-ink music nib and (something I'd been looking for for a while) no. 7109 feed removal tool. This is very much a music nib, with long tines and a slight left-foot oblique (I don't think this is from wear), and the feed runs to a millimetre or less from the tips of the tines so holding the pen vertically is a must.

Very interesting nib - I have a number of different Osmiroid nibs but not that one. I suspect it was actually meant to be held horizontally, but still near perpendicular to the paper, while composing at a piano with manuscript paper on the piano's music holder.

I believe it's meant to be used with the pen close to perpendicular to the paper and the nib aligned vertically, to give the thin verticals and broad cross strokes necessary for music notation. The slight oblique angle actually makes for a pretty comfortable hold when writing.

I'll admit that I was more interested in the feed removal tool than the nib, but it's a fun nib with which to write and I'm glad I bought it.

I would love to see the tool. I actually have 40 1st generation Osmiroid nibs that I got second hand and most are very dirty - it would be really nice if I could clean them well!
