doubting wether or not to replace the sac and start using it or leave it in this nice unused condition

Ah, the eternal question. If you try it, you might even like it. Plus, the FPN community benefits from a new story and photos. These pens are made for gawking 🖋️🎶

Well, my answer to PatrickA would of course to use it.  I don't have the sort of discretionary budget that allow for buying a pen just to have as a display item.

The only pens I don't use are the ones that haven't gotten fixed yet (or in the case of some of the recent acquisitions, haven't gotten flushed out yet...).

That beautiful green is so tempting.

It is a nice color. I’m glad I got it.

TL;DR: This post is about a Pelikan Level L65 red with steel F nib, inked from the Level's own inkpot with Pelikan's own Royal Blue.

Overall, a surprisingly nice pen. Writes well out of the box, has good ergonomics, helps guide your hand and other activities. I like it.

That's a nice pen! I can fully understand the seduction behind the buy - such technical extravaganza are irresistible.

... btw. I will visit my local store today ...

One life!

Good luck, @InesF! I'm keeping the L65 in my daily (work) lineup, it's a fun pen and so it lightens the moment.

I did end up replacing the sac and using it right now. It's a lovely writer with some flex and really like the blue. See below for its first scribbles, 65 year after it was purchased.

What an amazing pen! Congratulations on restoring it, you can do more than I'm able to atm 😄

Love also the nib and the photo. Thanks for sharing! (Auto-correct wanted to say thanks for Sharon, but I guess you haven't named the pen yet... And not Sharon. 😉

Enjoy the weekend!

Went to the SF pen show today and bought two pens, plus received one in the mail. No photos today, maybe later. Let's get started.

From the pen show:

Parker 51 Vacumatic first year double-jewel in Dove Gray.

Parker 51 Vacumatic 1945 double-jewel in Burgundy (Richard's Pens says this is a rare color for a Vacumatic, so I want to be extra sure to identify it correctly. Fortunately I have a Burgundy Aerometric and a single-jewel in Cordovan Brown -- the more common color -- to compare to, and so far it comes up Burgundy).

In the mail: An early Sheaffer Balance Oversize in black with what the seller called a "humped" clip, i.e. it is not the smoothly arcing clip that I have seen on what I suppose are later models. I don't know much about Sheaffers at this point, is a "humped" clip of any interest? That's not really why I bought it, but it would be interesting to know.

Also had the nib on my Parker Vacumatic Senior Maxima, made in France and in opaque black fixed, which is like having a new pen because I couldn't really write with it before.

Congrats on the 51 Vacs.  I didn't know that Burgundy was a rare color for those (I only have one of the later model 51 Aeros in that color).

As for the "humped" clip on the Balance Oversize?  No clue.  I have my husband's grandfather's Oversize, but had to get a replacement cap for it when I was getting the pen repaired (the cap from my mother-in-law's Eversharp Skyline jammed onto the pen when she gave it to me).  Of course now I'm going to have to look at the clip on the replacement cap....

A Kaweco Sport Brass - with a double broad and a fine nib. I have to do some more writing with it, but first impression is good. Both nibs are smooth, with the BB being 'buttery' smooth and quite wet, and the F with just a nice hint of feedback.

Posted it handles quite well, threads are not sharp and bothering.

The BB is not for every-day writing, but for writing birthday and Christmas cards, with a nice ink in it of course. The F is intended to be used at work.

With replacement nibs just € 7.00, I thought it a nice pen to try out several nib sizes without breaking the bank. Replacing a nib is a piece of cake.

Happy! And... it is keeping me from buying 'the other pen' that is much, much more expensive!

Very nice surrogate, @Thymen, thanks for sharing. (Should we ask what's the 'other'?)

I use my Kaweco BB for daily writing, at least the specialized part where I draw and/or tick checkboxes in my daily task list. Nothing like a thick swipe with the BB nib in Diamine Pumpkin to get me enthusiastic about doing one more. 😃

"The Other"... ahem.... that would be a Pilot 845 Custom Urushi Vermillion....

Someone dear to the family had come to spend some time with us after several years of not being able to due to Covid travel restrictions. She does quite a bit of journaling, and I gave her a nice 400 page Tomoe River notebook and some of my pens to use while with us. She enjoyed one of the pens very much, so I ordered one in the colour she liked. But the pen did not arrive in time, she left before it did, and is now on the other side of the planet. When the pen finally is here, I'll send it to her.

But I did not want her to leave empty-handed, so I gave her one of the pens she had used to take with her. And that means that I have been staring at an empty slot in my pen cabinet for a few weeks now.... and that bothers me! It needed to be filled!

But the pens I like such as the 845 are rather expensive. I considered the Pilot 823, but somehow it does not appeal to me that much. So I decided to forget it. But, well, you all know it is an itch that needs to be scratched....

I happened to see some reviews of the Kawaco Sport, and that brass one.... I kept returning to it. It is not that expensive. So I ordered it. And now that I have it... I like it! It feels good, writes good, adds something to my collection that was not there yet, offers cheap replacement nibs in different sizes.... and best of all, it fills the empty slot in my pen cabinet and thus scratches the itch just the same as a Pilot 845 would....

Good scratch, @Thymen, thanks for sharing the story as well! I like all the pens you mentioned, but I have a Kaweco every day in my kit 😄

Also love the Kaweco Brass sport, it will probably out live all my other pens. Currently have a broad nib in it with GvFC Burned Orange.

and on the Pilot 845, this is also on my wish list. I had one in my hands at the Dutch pen show, had cash in my pocket and they were selling it for a great price....... but didn't pull the trigger. Still regret it, so perhaps next year.

Enjoy your Kaweco.

I was wrong (not the first time). I took a closer look and made sure I knew which of my existing pens was which, and the new pen is definitely Cordovan Brown. Not a problem, I would have bought it at the price anyway. On a side note, I need to find a way to label my 51's with their color. Some of them can be hard to identify offhand.

I've heard that's one of the reasons that Plum is such a rare color for the Aerometrics -- it wasn't popular because it's often hard to distinguish from Black or Burgundy unless you have the pens side by side (and in daylight).

As for Cordovan Brown?  That color has eluded me.  A number of years ago there was one on eBay that the seller had put up for someone else.  I'd ask questions and the seller would check with the original owner and get back to me in a day or so with the answers.  And then?  With literally seconds to go, I got SNIPED....  And not enough time to react (my internet connection at the time was a lot slower than it is now).  Admittedly I've seen some Cordovan Brown 51s and the color doesn't wow me.  But the fact that I had this great rapport going with the seller and then lost out just rankles me to this day....

That's a pity, @inkstainedruth! But it also shows you've got a good eye for pens 😄

A very good reason to buy pens.
