Nope, and probably won't get around to it this weekend. Fortunately, it's not like I'm contemplating buying more of them while AliExpress's 11.11 sale campaign is still in play, so I don't really need to know in a hurry how they perform, in order to make in informed decision.

@A Smug Dill May I ask, please, which nib you got in the Jinhao 80? If a 03 or EF then I would be interested to know your thoughts, especially about line width. 

 

I am thinking about buying one to put a Lamy 1.1 nib in and might consider another if the line width of the 03 or EF is as thin as I hope it will be.

That avocado-coloured Jinhao 80 has an EF nib. Most of the ones in other colours that are coming have gold-coloured 03 nibs on them, although just to complete the range of options — for comparison — one of them will have an F nib on it. The only Jinhao 80 I've been using has a black EF nib transplanted from a Jinhao 35 (in ‘stealth’ black), and that writes/draws surprisingly finely. I haven't tested any of the other (black with silver clip) Jinhao 35 pens I received some weeks ago.

I have not yet received any of the Jinhao 80 pens that are factory-fitted with gold-coloured 03 nibs, but I do have a couple of Jinhao 1001 (desk) pens that have those nibs, as well as another couple of 1001 that have gold-coloured EF nibs. Just now, I inked up one of each (using a shared converter, actually) with Jacques Herbin Noir Abyssal. The 03 nib looks narrower to the eye than the EF nib; but, on paper, the EF nib writes significantly finer, even though the 03 is nominally 0.3mm and the EF nib nominally 0.38mm. I think the difference is caused by the pen with the 03 nib being significantly wetter, judging by the intensity of the black lines produced. The 03 nib barely makes the grade of a ‘Western EF‘, whereas the gold-coloured EF nib I tested performs on par with ‘Japanese EF’ nibs.

Here is the pen I got today. It’s a Retro 51 Silver Lining pen with 1.1mm stub nib.

This came yesterday in the mail, about a month earlier than I was told....   I've wanted a "Tas" pen for several years, and while this is not the 1999 version, that's okay with me (I actually like the background color a bit better, and it was WAY less expensive than the one I got outbid on a few weeks ago; I mean seriously, a Parker Vector going for over $32 US? ). 

Temporarily snarfed a converter from another Vector (looks as if I'm going to have to order a few since I didn't have enough unused converters) and inked up the pen today with a sample that's been kicking around unused -- De Atramentis Antique Pink.  This has an F nib (most of my Vectors are either F or M, with the exception of the calligraphy set). 

Sometimes you just need a pen that's fun and a bit silly....  Which is of course why I ALSO have the Shrek "Puss in Boots" Vector.

I've wanted a Tas pen ever since I bought one for my friend after she and her housemate lost almost everything in a bad fire a number of years ago.  It wasn't until after the fire that I found out she collected pens and writing instruments (her pride and joy had been a Caran d'Ache pencil).  And I saw one of the original 1999 Looney Toons Tas pens on eBay and was going, "Oh, Teri NEEDS that...."  And of course then wanted one for myself....  Got outbid on a couple on them recently -- still trying to figure out who in their right mind would pay over $32 US for one though....  

I think this one actually looks better than the original design.  After winning this one, the same seller had one that had, IIRC, a white barrel and blue cap (but with the same really long shipping time).  

I was at something yesterday afternoon, and was showing off the new toy and also the Shrek "Puss in Boots" Vector to people (that one I had to have because it just made me laugh).  Come to think, I got that from the same seller as the Tas pen....

I've now tested two gold-coloured 03 nibs (one factory-fitted on a Jinhao 1001 desk pen, the other factory-fitted on a Jinhao 80) and two gold-coloured EF nibs (as above again), and my conclusion so far is that the 03 nibs do not actually write finer than the EF nibs, and chances are the EF nibs will write finer for the same ‘wetness’; and the ‘wetness’ factory of the individual pen or nib will trump the width grade. They seem to perform to between 12H11V and 13H12V on Rhodia DotPad 80g/m² paper, so, by my idiosyncratic reckoning, on the cusp between F and EF (or, I suppose you could say, ”it's a Western EF”).

 

I have received more pens than that now, but I don't think I'll bother testing more of those specifically (using the same ink and all) for the line width aspect; the results would still only be anecdotal and not statistically significant.

At a guess, @Mercian must have edited (or at least ‘saved’ anew, even if neither the image nor its metadata was modified) the gallery image after posting it in his earlier ‘reply’ in this thread as an inline image.

I went to another suburb, Blue Springs, to shop at Five Below and Barnes and Noble. I got these pens at Five Below for $3.25 a package. They will stay in a pouch in the cars. They actually cost $4.25.
