Majohn A1 (a capless clone)

VillersCotterets

Recommended Posts

I own (4) of the Majohn A1s:    Orange - Feb. 2022;  Matte Black - May 2022;  Blue - July 2022;  Green - Aug. 2022.

I have had no flaking, bubbles, or crazing of the coating.  They look like they did the day they arrived.  I've been

carrying the green one in my purse for the past couple of weeks without an issue.  I'm so sorry to hear you're

having that problem.

Likewise, I have four A1s, none of which show any signs of issues with the coating.  The matt black is getting a tiny bit shiny in places with wear, but other than that they are all perfect.  Sadly, two of them have issues with flow at the moment, and will take a bit of tweaking.

Cheers,

Effrafax.

Hi y'all, sorry for the delayed reply, I've been under the weather.

I'm super glad to hear no one else has had any issues. I'll likely get another if they come out with any additional nib sizes.

Here is my attempt at taking photos.

  • On the left image you can see the micro bubbling as you get closer to the metal. That's where if feels rougher. The crazing is on the right side of the barrel.
  • The second photo of the chipping I could see happening from rough use — though I have no clue when that would have occurred.

I don't *think* I've treated the pen roughly, but I don't have any other pens with this type of lacquer so I don't have anything to compare it to.

@g33klibrarian, the consensus on this thread seems to be that your experience of flaking is out of the ordinary - thankfully, no-one else who's replied has seen something similar happen to their pens - but that doesn't make it any less disappointing that it *did* happen to you!

If you'd purchased it from a brick n mortar store, and/or were dealing with a big pen company like Pilot or Pelikan, I'd be suggesting you take it back and ask for a refund or exchange.  A Majohn pen bought online from Aliexpress or eBay is a little trickier (assuming that's where you sourced yours?) - I suspect you'll just have to write it off as "one of those things that happens".

Like you, I'm keeping my eye out for developments with these pens - if they come out with other nib sizes, I just *might* order another one...

For what it's worth, you have a unique opportunity to wield a one-of-a-kind raw brass Moonman A1...provided you lean into the lacquer loss.

As long as @g33klibrarian likes white (???) brass.

Add lightness and simplicate.

Individual sellers have them between 7-11 on Aliexpress now.

I've only found EF nibs/units.  I'll look some more.  Or I could just purchase a VP SU unit.  Still a better deal than a new VP.

Correct. The flagship still has not offered any kind of variety despite the ability to do so. P136 got variety, this nib units would not be a big ask but patience I guess

But do they sell full nib units like Pilot? I was only able to find the nibs themselves, but I'm not especially well versed in Aliexpress...

Thanks! The price though...too expensive for me to justify, so I had to buy a whole new A2 🤭

I also have a VP nib unit in my A1.  I found that the A1 nib unit bleeds into the section when deploying the nib.  After 2/3 days of use it's an unacceptable mess.  As seen at 4:33 in this review, which I discovered yesterday.

I never had the experience of a pen and ink match before. I put Pelikan 4001 Blue Black in my Moonman A1 (MaJohn), and it didn’t want to write right away. Once that ink seemed to run out, I cleaned it. Then I put De Atramentis Robert Koch, or Adular Blue in it. Now it writes every time, whether it’s same day writing, or writing after several days. Now it seems the A1 and De A ink are a pair.
