Great Masters Pirelli

Hi all,

Apologies if this has already been posted/discussed here.  Just saw the Montblanc "Great Masters Pirelli" edition pens.  It comes as a fountain pen and roller ball.  And despite the >$2k pricetag, I sort of, really want one.

Has Montblanc done another pen that's similar in look before?

Hi @gyang333 are you aware of the starwalker ultra black? It isn’t made of rubber but otherwise may be fairly similar in appearance? The other pens in the Great Masters series are superb but none look very similar, perhaps L’Aubrec may be the closest but it’s a wooden pen, again, not rubber.

I also like the Pirelli.

I have the LeGrand UltraBlack (bought it 4 years ago, now discontinued). It has the same size and a similar look, although more “plain”. Another option (not Montblanc) is the Cross Peerless AK 47: the elaborated texture makes me think of the “Pirelli”.

I saw and handled the Pirelli last weekend at a MB Boutique. I was surprised to find that I liked how it looked and felt in the hand — but, not enough to buy it. I guess it will be a nice thematic pairing with the pending release of the Ferrari pen.

Thanks for your feedback!  I will check out the other ultrablack options.  And thank you for the hands' on feedback that it felt good in the hand!  It's annoying when I don't live near a boutique anymore where I could try it out, especially at the Pirelli's pricepoint.

I agree that the idea of a rubberized MB has a really compelling element to it, and I think this pen looks well done.

There was a Starwalker Spirit of Racing fountain pen. It's one that intrigued me and one of my favorite Starwalkers. But the body isn't rubber so much as harder plastic?

Here in the tropics rubber will transform after a while into gooey sticky gunk. Thanks but no thanks! I have already enough decaying celluloid pens!

AoKiu, as my extraction is from the subtropical Subcontinent, and having experienced equatorial climes, I can assure you that your point is very well taken, but for the sake of aficionados of the maisons Montblanc and Pirelli in those locales, one hopes that the material of the pen’s barrel and cap will fare at least as well if not better than that of the latter maison’s noteworthy contributions to the celebrated events held by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile.

Nonetheless, thank you for the chuckle!

Hi everyone, got in contact with a MB boutique, and the StarWalker Ultra Black are no longer available.  Remembering that I made a contact at one of the MB outlet locations awhile back to source a TimeWalker alligator strap (since that model is long discontinued), they had the ballpoint version available (and at a nice discount).  It's very stunning in person, however I do wonder if the matte black pen body will show scratches/scuffs eventually.

This is what happened to my spare castors for my office chair. The castors from my Rota Tote tool box suffered the same fate. I have pocket knives with rubber handles - same, became a gooey mess! Keep on chuckling!

Fate is leading you to the Pirelli @gyang333 don’t fight it…!

I can easily withstand it! NFW that I buy this pen! Attached picture shows my JP Morgan LE after I pulled it out from the pen pouch. Note: there was no force or pressure applied to the pen. It just broke into two pieces by sitting in my collection! So much for the 'precious' plastic!!

AoKiu, this is shocking to see, and indeed, not at all humourous.  I am very sorry for your tribulations with rubber products.  Your testimony has been highly educational for someone like myself who lives in a completely different environment..  Please forgive me for causing offence by seemingly flippant reply, which was entirely unintentional.

That is awful, I hope you can replace your JP Morgan @AoKiu - perhaps you were insured? I really didn't think that @NoType meant any offence but understand that that may have hit a nerve - I also live in a temperate climate and wouldn't have expected such damage either. I am really looking forward to seeing the Pirelli but understand it may not be ideal in some locations!

Indeed, The Mustard, I did not mean any offence; on the contrary, I could not have been more mortified to see the state of AoKiu’s chair casters as well as the damage sustained to AoKiu’s Patron of Art J P Morgan!  Until now, I had no idea that rubber and plastic components could be so vulnerable to high temperatures and humidity levels. If a sterling silver overlay pen like the PoA Morgan deteriorated to such an extent while stored in a pen pouch, one shudders to think of the fate of the Great Masters Pirelli pen in similar conditions.
